Jesus is preaching to a group of people that likely never considered themselves to be blessed. In Matthew chapter 5, Jesus continues to show us a picture of His “upside down kingdom.” This crowd who had been mourning, marginalized, and without a physical inheritance is now hearing that the kingdom of heaven is theirs and that they can see God. This blessing not only brings them a new perspective, but it also helps them to know that they will be able to live out the rest of the sermon on the mount.
