This festival is like a kaleidoscope where people from all walks of life come together to add their bits of colour to create a carnival which has achieved world-wide recognition. Durga Puja has been declared as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Asian Paints Sharad Shamman is a pioneer since 1985 in celebrating and honouring the best Pujo celebrations in respect of art, taste and culture. This year will be the 38th year of Sharad Shamman, a strong testament to Asian Paints legacy of four decades in Kolkata and West Bengal. Asian Paints has initiated another homage to the sweet memories of this great festival through this podcast - Madhur Smriti. Episode 3 - Puja of Commoners | বারো ঘরের দুর্গা
Durga Puja had evolved from a festival for aristocrats to a festival of commoners like us. The British era also witnessed revolution in the festival over the years! In the year 1790, a group of 12 friends at Guptipara in Hooghly decided to make Durga Puja, a festival for everyone. Which is today’s ‘BaaroYaari’ puja. The Swadeshi movement was at its peak in the year 1919. Even Subhas Chandra Bose took the help of Barwari Puja to raise a mass movement against the British. The Durga Puja organized at Simla Byam Samiti by Netaji was called Swadeshi Thakur because the idol of Goddess Durga wore the attire of khadi and weapons were made of iron and bronze. Durga Puja went through another revolutionary change in 1985. Asian paints Sharad Shamman was started this year. Moving away from simple Pandals, the era of theme puja began. In this episode of Madhur Smriti we will listen to the colourful stories and the evolution of Kolkata’s Barowari Puja. ‘Madhur Smriti’ is another initiative by Asian Paints to collect stories and memories of Durga Puja festival in Bengal. বারো ইয়ার অর্থাৎ কিনা বারো বন্ধুর তাৎক্ষনিক সিদ্ধান্তের ফসল বাঙালির বারোয়ারি পুজো। ১৯১৯ সালে স্বদেশী ভাবধারায় জেগে উঠছে এক নতুন প্রজন্ম। তাদের মনে হল, স্বদেশী আন্দোলনে সফলতা আসবে দুর্গা পুজো করেই। কোলকাতার বাগবাজার, কুমারটুলি, সিমলা ব্যায়াম সমিতি- এই বারোয়ারি পুজোগুলোর সাথে নেতাজী বিভিন্ন সময়ে যুক্ত ছিলেন। বাঙালির দুর্গাপুজোয় একটা বৈপ্লবিক পরিবর্তন এলো ১৯৮৫ সালে। শুদ্ধ শুচি, সুস্থ রুচি। কবি সুভাষ মুখোপাধ্যায়ের লেখা এই স্লোগানে ভর করেই থিম পুজো শুরু হলো শহরে। চল্লিশ বছর আগে এশিয়ান পেন্টস শারদ সম্মানের এই ক্যাম্পেন আক্ষরিক অর্থেই বদলে দিয়েছিল পুজোর চালচিত্র।
