There are some adult children of narcissistic parents and grandparents who might not be clear as to why he or she was selected to play the dysfunctional role of scapegoat while growing up. This confusion can sometimes compound symptoms of narcissistic abuse syndrome. The narcissistic family system is often set up in such a way that certain tactics to control scapegoated children are not only diabolical, but not as apparent to outsiders, friends and distant family members of the child who has been scapegoated. In order to gain some peace of mind, adult children of narcissistic parents can learn how to see the signs of pathological narcissism in order to heal and thrive forward past the aftermath of narcissistic abuse syndrome.
