Hi everyone, welcome to our podcast, Loud Slurp, hosted by two working journalists Ang Li and Vicky Huang. The inspiration for the podcast came to us when we talked about Asian cultures, food and China while slurping noodles in West Village in New York City. A year later, we finally started this podcast as a passion project and a way for two best friends to stay in touch while on lockdown due to Covid-19. Being a Chinese journalist, is that even possible?
In this episode, Owen Guo, who worked for the Financial Times and the New York Times for seven years in Beijing, joins us to talk about working as a Chinese journalist for foreign media in China and all the obstacles he and many of his Chinese colleagues had to overcome to produce stories that help readers all over the world to get a comprehensive and up-close look at the giant nation. He also shares with us some of the most memorable stories he encountered in everyday Chinese life and on reporting trips. Last but not least, we discuss the prospect of Chinese nationals practicing independent journalism in China and the broader implications of recent restrictions placed on Chinese news assistants and researchers working in foreign media outlets.
