On August 2nd, my daughter Gracie should have turned 13. She was born with a congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome and lived just 82 days—but in that short time, she changed my life forever.
In this episode, I’m bringing you with me through the day we honored her birthday this year. From a quiet early-morning walk along the shore of Lake Superior, to baking her pink birthday cake filled with circus animal cookies, to our family tradition of tossing pink roses into the water at Artist’s Point in Grand Marais, Minnesota—this is how we remember and celebrate her every year.
If you’ve walked through child loss, the loss of a loved one, or are in the middle of a grief journey yourself, my hope is that this conversation reminds you of two things:
Healing doesn’t mean forgetting.
God is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).
You’ll hear about:
• Our family traditions for honoring a child after loss
• The balance of grief and joy on milestone days
• Why I didn’t ask others to wear pink or post about it this year
• How faith has carried me through 13 birthdays without her
