Back to work 🥲 Emails, meetings, coffee machines… September is here and our holidays are officially over! In this episode, let’s make the “back to work” season a little less painful by learning small talk in Mandarin about office life, meetings, coffee, and even complaining in a cute way.

📘 Grammar of the Day

要 (yào) + Verb = need to / going to

  • 我要上班。
    I need to go to work.
  • 我们要开会。
    We are going to have a meeting.
  • 老板要加班。
    The boss wants us to work overtime.

👉 Super easy: 要 + verb = something you’re going to do or need to do.


🗂️ Key Vocabulary + Examples

  1. 上班 – shàngbān – to go to work
    我每天八点上班。
    I go to work at 8 every day.
  2. 下班 – xiàbān – to get off work
    六点下班,太开心了!
    Getting off work at 6, so happy!
  3. 加班 – jiābān – overtime
    今天要加班。
    Today I need to work overtime.
  4. 请假 – qǐngjià – to ask for leave
    我想请假一天。
    I want to take one day off.
  5. 同事 – tóngshì – colleague
    我的同事很友好。
    My colleague is very friendly.
  6. 老板 – lǎobǎn – boss
    老板要开会。
    The boss wants a meeting.
  7. 开会 – kāihuì – to have a meeting
    我们十点开会。
    We have a meeting at 10.
  8. 报告 – bàogào – report
    我要写一个报告。
    I need to write a report.
  9. 截止日期 – jiézhǐ rìqī – deadline
    截止日期是明天!
    The deadline is tomorrow!
  10. 项目 – xiàngmù – project
    我们有一个新项目。
    We have a new project.
  11. 电脑 – diànnǎo – computer
    我的电脑很慢。
    My computer is very slow.
  12. 咖啡 – kāfēi – coffee
    没有咖啡,我不能上班。
    Without coffee, I can’t go to work.
  13. 累 – lèi – tired
    上班五分钟,累一天。
    Five minutes at work, tired all day.
  14. 工资 – gōngzī – salary
    工资到了!
    Salary arrived!
  15. 假期综合症 – jiàqī zōnghé zhèng – holiday syndrome
    我有假期综合症。
    I have holiday syndrome.
