S1E304-Ecclesiastes 3-4: Two Are Better Than One

Podcast Introduction

Today is Poetry Thursday and we’ll read Ecclesiastes 3-4. I have an on this date in church history for you. I’m calling today’s episode “Two Are Better Than One.”

Design: Steve Webb | Photo: Quaritsch Photography on Unsplash

Comments on Ecclesiastes 4

These chapters, while not entirely inspiring, seem to be a little less hopeless sounding than the first two, don’t you think?

There’s a lot here to think about, but in our limited time, I’d like to focus for just a moment on chapter four.

Halfway through the chapter, Solomon talked about the man who works so hard he has no family, no son or even a brother. And he said that this is a bad and senseless thing. No disagreement there, right?

But then he talks about a better alternative. The next four verses explain that two are better than one, and three are even better. Like Solomon, in my older years I have learned that this is true.

My dad was very much a loner. A “self made man”. He worked literally seven days a week until he got too old to work. In all my childhood years, until I moved out of the house at the age of 21, he probably took no more than a total of a month off work for a very few short vacations. He did pretty well for himself, financially, though never rich. But for a guy who barely finished the eighth grade, he did well.

When I was a boy, he taught me that friends would always let you down, and that it is better to keep people at arm’s length. Don’t let anyone in. Do things on your own. Don’t ask for help. Figure things out yourself. Be your own man.

It wasn’t until many, many years later that I found out just how poor that makes you, even if you have a lot of money. When my dad died, he had no friends at his funeral. No one but my mom, my sister and her three children, my wife, my kids and me to mourn him.

My father-in-law was the exact opposite of my dad. He was giving, warm, caring, loving man. He worked almost until the day he died, not because he was trying to accumulate money, but because he barely made enough to pay the bills. He was an integral part of our church and was there whenever the doors were open. I can’t tell you all the jobs he had at church over the years. Suffice it to say that if he saw something that needed to be done, he did it. Everyone loved and respected Rip Collins. And when he died, there was not an empty seat in the church nor a dry eye in the house. Rip Collins died a rich man. And I have no doubt that when he met Jesus he heard a hearty, “Well done, good and faithful servant!”

My father-in-law knew that it is better to be with people than go it alone. There is no virtue in being a self made man if you close out the world in the process.

Podcast Introduction

This is the 300th episode of the 12th season of the Lifespring Family Audio Bible. Today is History Tuesday. Our reading is 2 Chronicles 25-28. I'm calling today’s episode “Legacy."

Design: Steve Webb | Photo: Samantha Sophia on Unsplash

Comments on 2 Chronicles 25-28

In these chapters we read of the reigns of Amaziah, Uzziah, Jotham, and Ahaz.

Each of these kings were descendants of David, and as I have said in previous episodes, coming from a believing family does not mean that the next generation will follow God. The opposite is also true. Coming from a non-believing family does not mean the following generation will not follow God. We saw that in these kings, and I’m sure most, if not all of us have seen this in our own families.

The reason I’m pointing this out is that I believe that many of us, especially those of us that are parents, take it for granted when raising our children in a believing home, that they will follow us in accepting Jesus as their Savior. Beloved, if we do that, we make a terrible mistake. We can never assume that our kids will absorb our faith as their own. There will come a time when they must choose to believe. Just as we chose to believe, they will have to choose. As parents, we have to be very deliberate in showing them in a thousand different ways why believing in Him is the very best thing they could ever do. We have to let them see that our faith is real, that Jesus is the center of our lives, and that He matters. Not just on Sundays, but every day. And we have to talk to them about our faith…and our talk has to match our walk. Our children are our most important missions field.

Now back to today’s chapters…

As is common to most people, the first two of these kings, Amaziah and Uzziah, had their good points and bad. Their spiritual victories and spiritual failures. Each of us has strengths and weaknesses. It's the human condition. Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death. Anything less than perfection, anything less than a completely sinless life means that we fall short of the glory of God. That's why we all need a savior.

There is a common thread that was evident in the chapters we read today with the failures of Amaziah, Uzziah and Ahaz. Each one of them sinned in their own ways, but the common thread was pride. Pride invariably brings destruction, even to people who showed great devotion to God in their early days. Once we begin to believe that our accomplishments come from our own abilities, we are headed for a fall. It can happen to anyone, at any age. I have discovered that my own susceptibility to sin is still alive, even after more than fifty years of being a follower of Jesus. If I take my eyes off of Him, if I begin to rely on my own "goodness", I quickly find that I cannot walk His path on my own. As the old hymn says, "I need thee every hour."

To his credit, of the four kings we read about today, only Jotham seems to have had a lifelong record of following God's direction. Verse 6 of chapter 27 tells us, "Jotham grew powerful because he was determined to live as the Lord his God wanted." What a legacy.

My legacy will unfortunately not be without a list of failures, but I am determined to keep my eyes on the prize, because I long to hear my Savior say on that day that I finally see Him face to ...

Podcast Introduction

Today is Gospels Saturday. We’ll the complete the Gospels with chapters 27 and 28 of the Acts of the Apostles. This is the last episode of the Lifespring! One Year Bible. Yes, after 13 seasons, this is it. I’m calling this episode “A Call To Action.“

Design: Jason Paschall | Photo: Victoria Priessnitz on Unsplash

Summary

In Acts 27, we find Paul on a journey to Rome after appealing to Caesar. Despite facing a perilous storm at sea, Paul remained steadfast in his faith, assuring the crew that God had promised their safety. This message may have initially been met with skepticism, but as the storm raged on for two weeks, Paul's encouragement and actions brought hope. He urged everyone to eat and gave thanks to God, demonstrating his unwavering faith. This act filled the hearts of those on board with hope, emphasizing the power of hope in challenging times. It's a reminder that we can make a difference by being a source of hope for others, as I've experienced in my own life.

Moving on to Acts 28, we see Paul quoting a message from Isaiah to Jewish leaders in Rome. This message had been given to the Jewish people in the past as a warning from God due to their repeated rejection of Him. Paul's use of these verses signified that the Gospel, rejected by some, would now be shared with the Gentiles who would embrace it. This shows God's patience but also a point at which His patience wears thin.

Today, as we witness increasing moral decay and rejection of Christ in our world, it's crucial for believers to pray for divine intervention, for people's eyes to be opened, and for the salvation of our unsaved loved ones. The message is clear: now is the time to be bold and share the message of salvation, because time may be running out. We have the message of life, and we should not be afraid to share it with those around us who are in need of hope and salvation.

Revelation 18-22: The Final Chapters

Transcript

Today's Bible Translation

Bible translation used in today's episode: Ch. 18-20 NLV, Ch. 21-22 CEB

Podcast Introduction

Today is Prophecy Friday. We’ll the prophetic books with chapters 18-22 of the last book in the Bible, the book of Revelation. There’s a new voicemail that I think you’ll find interesting, and as I promised to James in Norway a couple of days ago, I’ll do a quick "Steve's Practical Guide to Quiet Time with the LORD” today. I’m calling this episode “The Final Chapters.“

Design: Jason Paschall | Photo: Victoria Priessnitz on Unsplash

Summary

In these final chapters of Revelation, significant events unfold. Chapter 19 begins with a celebration in heaven, where people thank God for bringing justice against Babylon and avenging those who believed in Jesus. It's a time of great joy and worship.

Next, there's the "wedding supper of the Lamb." The Lamb symbolizes Jesus, and His bride is the church, represented as people wearing fine white linen, signifying their righteousness through God's grace.

Then, Jesus, the King of Kings, appears on a white horse as the Faithful and True One, ready to judge and wage a just war. This highlights the idea that sometimes war can be necessary against incorrigible evil.

The narrative continues with a battle between the beast (antichrist) and the false prophet against Jesus, but they're defeated, and the rest are killed.

In Chapter 20, an angel imprisons Satan for a thousand years in the abyss during the "Millennium." Jesus rules Earth, and deceased believers reign with Him. Afterward, Satan is briefly released but is eventually cast into the eternal lake of fire.

The Great White Throne judgment follows, where everyone is judged. Those not in the book of life face eternal separation from God in the lake of fire, respecting their choice to reject Him.

Chapter 21 reveals a new heaven and earth, a glorious creation, where God dwells openly with us, ushering in an age of unparalleled joy. There's no sorrow, pain, decay, or sin, and we have glorified bodies, free from weaknesses.

The New Jerusalem is described, likely our future home with its twelve never-closing gates. While eternity includes worshipping God, there may also be other activities due to God's infinite creativity.

In essence, Jesus' sacrifice grants us an extraordinary eternity as His bride. Personally, after more than 69 years on Earth, I looking forward to this time. How about you?

Summary

In chapter 7 verse 10, where the bride declares her belonging to her beloved, I’m reminded of Sally Field's famous Oscar speech. Despite our failures, Jesus loves us, as  Romans 5:8 says.

Why would Jesus, being holy, love humanity so profoundly? 1 John 4:8 tells us why: God is love. It’s who He is.

Podcast Introduction

Today is Psalms Wednesday. We’ll close this, the longest book of the Bible with chapters 149-150, and we’ll have our last prayer time together. I’m calling this episode “The Ultimate Encore.“

Design: Jason Paschall | Photo: Cason Asher on Unsplash

Summary

Chapters 149 and 150 are part of the Hallelujah Psalms, beginning and ending with praises to the Lord.

Psalm 149, like the other Hallelujah Psalms, lacks a specific title. It's a celebration of the joyful connection between God and His people, radiating the excitement of praising God together.

Psalm 150, the last in the book, offers a fitting conclusion with its exuberant praise. It invites all of creation to worship the Creator. This echoes the scenes of worship in the book of Revelation.

In Revelation, we glimpse heaven's worship, where countless beings from all nations and languages honor God.

Imagine a concert's finale, but on an unimaginable scale, where God's restoration brings endless celebration. With eternity at our disposal, we can worship and rejoice without end.

The closing Psalms offer a taste of the grand celebration awaiting us in God's presence. We'll declare, "Holy is the Lamb. Hallelujah! Great is the King of kings and Lord of lords!" It's a vision of eternal worship and awe in the presence of the Almighty.

Summary

Esther 6 illustrates how God orchestrates events in our lives for His purpose. In 2004, I learned about the brand new technology of podcasting when I tuned into a radio show, seemingly by chance. But I believe it was the hand of God. Following His call, I created the world’s first Christian podcast. This led to many unexpected opportunities and blessings. It all began on a fateful day in September 2004. Yes, God orders events in our lives to fulfill His plans.

Deuteronomy 32-34: Moses Says Goodbye

Transcript

Today's Bible Translation

Bible translation used in today's episode: Ch. 32-33 CEB, Ch. 34 GWT

Podcast Introduction

Today is The Law Monday. We’ll complete this section of the bible with the final chapters of Deuteronomy…chapters 32-34. I’m calling this episode “Moses Says Goodbye.“

Design: Jason Paschall | Photo: Susan Myers on Unsplash

Summary

In Deuteronomy 32, we read the "Song of Moses”, which emphasizes the importance of God's teachings and recounts Israel's history, including their disobedience and the consequences they faced. The chapter ends by highlighting the significance of following God's Law for a blessed life.

In Deuteronomy 33, Moses blesses the twelve tribes of Israel before his death. Simeon is notably omitted from these blessings, possibly due to the tribe's previous actions and reputation. Moses, aware of his impending death, uses this moment to encourage and bless the people he has led for forty years.

Finally, in Deuteronomy 34, God allows Moses a view of the Promised Land from Mount Nebo before his passing. This symbolizes the culmination of his life's journey and the passing of leadership to Joshua, signifying the continuation of God's plan for Israel. These chapters explore themes of God's faithfulness, the consequences of disobedience, the importance of God's Word, and the transition of leadership.

Today is Epistles Sunday. Our reading will be the tiny little book of Jude. Just 24 verses. And while it is short, we need to remember that it’s in the Bible for a reason. It’s message is important. I’m calling this episode “A Call to Persevere.“

Design: Jason Paschall | Photo: Midjourney

Summary

Jude's letter still resonates with relevance today. It emphasizes the need to defend our faith, especially in a time when Christianity faces challenges. The idea that Christianity is always one generation away from extinction underscores the importance of passing down the faith to the next generation.

We have a responsibility to follow Jesus' Great Commission, which calls for spreading the Gospel to all nations.

Jude also addresses the issue of false teachers who misuse God's grace to justify sexual sin. Modern arguments about love and God's acceptance parallel Jude's description of people doing what feels natural to them.

Jude encourages believers to abide in God's love, pray guided by the Holy Spirit, live lives that honor God, and offer praise to Him and Jesus Christ. His message transcends time, speaking to the early church, the contemporary church, and future generations.

He left for Jerusalem, where the leading priests and other Jewish leaders met with him and made their accusations against Paul. So he said, those of you in authority can return with me. If Paul has done anything wrong, you can make your accusations about eight or 10 days later, Festus return to assessor Ria. and on the following day, he took his seat in court and ordered that Paul be brought in. Podcast Introduction

It’s Prophecy Friday. Our reading will be Revelation 12-17, I’m calling this episode “The Antichrist, 666 and Babylon.“

Design: Jason Paschall | Photo: Midjourney

Summary

In Revelation 10-12, the Bible discusses spiritual warfare, emphasizing that our battles are not against people, but against spiritual forces of wickedness. In Revelation 12, there's a symbolic image of a woman, representing the church, with the sun as Jesus, a crown of twelve stars as the twelve apostles, and the moon as the Jewish people. The dragon, symbolizing Satan, has always tried to harm humanity and the church. Despite ongoing battles, Satan's defeat is certain, thanks to God's love and patience as He awaits more believers.

In Revelation 13 and 14, we encounter prophecies like the fall of Babylon and the mysterious number 666. Speculations about its meaning have existed throughout history, but its true significance will become clear when the time comes. Superstitions about this number are unwarranted. Instead, we should focus on doing the work God called us to, loving Him and others, and spreading the Good News.

Revelation 17 and 18 discuss a great sinful city, Babylon. While its identity is uncertain, we should find encouragement in the fact that throughout history, evil entities have risen but eventually faced destruction. Recent examples like ISIS remind us that evil will ultimately be judged by God. We serve a powerful and just God who acts at the perfect time, bringing swift and certain judgment when necessary.

Summary

As you probably know, this book can be read from at least two levels: As just an account of a bride and groom from the purely human level, or as an allegory of the love of Christ for the church. Both interpretations are beautiful, and both have merit.

I opened to my love, but my love had turned and gone away. I was crushed that he had left. I sought him but did not find him. I called him but he did not answer. The guards who go about the city found me. They beat and wounded me. They took my cloak from me. The Guardians of the walls. Young Women of Jerusalem I charge you. Steve Webb 0:03What do you know it's time for another edition of the Lifespring! One Year Bible and it's coming to you from Riverside, California. I'm your OG Godcaster. Steve Webb podcasting since 2004. It Psalms Wednesday, we'll read chapters 146 through 148. and we'll also have a time of prayer. The website is Lifespringmedia.com. and I'll have contact information at the end of today's show in case you got anything to say to me, before we read, let's pray. Our Heavenly Father, we thank you for our time together, we pray God that as we read today, you would bless us. Thank you for the Psalms. Lord, they teach us so much about how to praise you, how to worship you, and even how to just talk honestly to you. I pray God that you would teach us today in Jesus name. Amen. Are you ready? Let's begin.

Steve Webb 0:51The last five chapters or songs of the book of Psalms beginning with this Psalm 146, are known as the Hallelujah Psalms. So what does hallelujah mean? In the simplest terms, it means praise the Lord. But there's so much more to it than that. Listen to this from Bible study tools.com. The word itself is a transliteration into Greek of two Hebrew words halaal and Yawei. Hall all means to extol the greatness or excellence of a person, object or event. It's often translated to praise, but who are you to praise? Yahweh is the covenant name of God, so to say, hallelujah is saying, extol greatness to our covenant keeping God and so the final five psalms are all about that to extol greatness to our covenant keeping God. Well, what does extol mean? From Merriam Webster it means to praise highly to glorify. So are you beginning to understand Hallelujah means to celebrate, to praise to glorify, to lift up the name of God, to rejoice in to offer up to him all the honor he so rightly deserves. It’s History Tuesday. We’ll read Esther 1-5. I’m calling this episode “Queen Vashti's Rebellion.“

Design: Jason Paschall | Photo: Midjourney

Summary

The book of Esther is set in the vast Persian Empire, ruled by King Ahasuerus (Xerxes). Ahasuerus throws extravagant banquets to display his power. Queen Vashti refuses his inappropriate request during one such event, leading to her removal as queen.

The text also mentions Ephesians 5, emphasizing that respect should be earned through love, not demanded through mistreatment. Ahasuerus could have avoided the situation if he had loved Vashti genuinely. The story continues in the next reading.

Steve Webb 0:41Esther is the final book of history in the Bible. We'll read about a character by the name of King Ahasuerus. He's better known as Xerxes to students of history. and he was the son of Darius the first whom we read about in the books of Ezra, Daniel and Haggai. It's interesting to note that the ruins of Ahasuerus' palace in which the events of this book took place have been unearthed by archaeologists, as the events of this book take place, Ahasuerus' is the largest empire, the Persian empire the world had ever seen up to that point, spanning modern Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel and parts of Egypt, Sudan, Libya, and Arabia. So yeah, it was big. As the book takes place, Ezra had returned to Jerusalem, and 30 years before the temple had been rebuilt. 40 years later, under a hazard awareness, his successor or desert sees the first Nehemiah would return to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls.

It’s the Law Monday. We’ll read Deuteronomy 29-31. I’m calling this episode “On the Threshold.“

Design: Jason Paschall | Photo: myjuly on envato.com

Summary

Moses is near the end of his life and he has brought the people to the threshold of the Promised Land. However, because of the disobedience we read about in Numbers 20:7-12, it will not be Moses who leads them in. As a matter of fact, God will not allow him to even set foot in it.

But after leading these people for forty years, he doesn't just fade away. He has parting words for the people; for Joshua, whom God has appointed to be Moses' replacement; and for the priests.

Podcast Introduction

It’s Epistles Sunday. We’ll read 3 John, and we’ll have a time of prayer. I’m calling this episode “Ministry By Proxy.“

Design: Scott Snider | Photo: Ben White on Unsplash

Summary

3 John is addressed to a man named Gaius. There seem to be several men with this name in the Bible, one of whom was baptized by Paul. We don’t really know anything more specific about this Gaius, except that John considered him a dear friend.

John commends Gaius for the good reports he hears about him, and for the fact that he supports those who travel about, preaching the Gospel. It is a good thing to support missionaries and others who are on the front lines, sharing the Gospel. Even though we may not personally go out to preach the Good News, our support for them makes us an important, vital and integral part of the team.

Then John has a warning against a man named Diotrephes, and good words about one named Demetrius. John says, “Never imitate evil, but imitate good. The person who does good is from God. The person who does evil has never seen God.”

Podcast Introduction

It’s Gospels Saturday. We’ll read Acts 23-24. I’m calling this episode “The Conspiracy to Kill Paul.“

Design: Scott Snider | Photo: Thanti Riess on Unsplash

Summary

In Acts 23 there’s a plot to kill the Apostle Paul orchestrated by a group of Jews who were vehemently opposed to his teachings. These people went to extreme lengths, even taking an oath to abstain from eating and drinking until they had successfully ended Paul's life. This raises a troubling question: How could people who were part of a religious tradition, one that explicitly forbids murder, justify such a violent act?

The text highlights a broader issue that transcends this specific incident – the danger of extreme and rigid adherence to a particular ideology or agenda. In this case, these Jews were so dogmatic in their interpretation of the Mosaic Law that they couldn't see beyond its literal words. They were unable to grasp the deeper intentions of the Law, which Jesus sought to fulfill with his teachings.

This situation draws parallels to contemporary events where individuals or groups become so fixated on their beliefs that they resort to insults, violence, or even harm towards those who hold opposing views. It's a reminder that when people cannot engage in respectful dialogue and accept differing perspectives, there's a problem in society.

Disagreement does not equate to hatred, and it certainly doesn't justify name-calling, physical violence, or property destruction. This principle applies not only to matters of religion but also to culture and politics. A civilized society should foster open, respectful discussion and peaceful coexistence. Sadly, it appears that civility is in short supply in some quarters today.

Podcast Introduction

It’s Prophecy Friday. We’ll read Revelation 7-11. I’m calling this episode “The Seventh Seal.“

Design: Scott Snider | Photo: Midjourney

Summary

In Revelation chapters 8 and 9, the story continues from earlier chapters where a mysterious book with seven seals is introduced. No one in heaven or on earth could open it except for Jesus, referred to as the Lion from the tribe of Judah.

Chapter 6 reveals the opening of the first six seals, leaving only one unopened. But in Chapter 7, there is a break in the narrative as 144,000 people from twelve different tribes are marked as God's servants. A vast multitude from all over the world praises God and the Lamb.

In Chapter 8, picture a grand scene in your mind's eye: a multitude in Heaven before God's throne, including believers, angels, and Jesus Himself. The seventh and final seal is about to be opened, and all eyes are fixed on the book. When the seal is finally broken, an astonishing silence descends for half an hour, creating a moment of intense anticipation and wonder.

During this silence, an angel appears at the altar with incense, symbolizing the prayers of believers rising before God. This underscores the importance of prayer and how God pays attention to it. The focus of Heaven is on these prayers as they are presented at this critical moment in history.

This passage highlights that the prayers of God's people play a vital role in shaping the course of the world's final moments. It emphasizes the significance of prayer, even more powerful than any worldly forces, according to theologian T. F. Torrance. In light of this, it becomes clear that God values and considers our prayers as incredibly important.
