Episode 5 - Communication: Do’s and Don’ts

Communication can be challenging, especially in a world where personalities range widely. Most communicators fall into one of two categories: Active Listeners or Inactive Listeners.

Listening to others may seem simple, and many believe they have excellent listening skills. It is, however, vital to ask yourself when having a simple conversation or debate, do you listen to respond or learn? It takes effort to communicate effectively, especially considering many factors.

Good active listening skills take time to develop. It takes practice to focus on your internal self while projecting yourself externally in a balanced manner. When we actively listen to others, we earn their trust, respect, and the potential for a future connection. Individuals are less likely to want to communicate with you again if you are an inactive listener.

Before engaging in a dialogue or debate with another person or group, you should conduct the following self-evaluation:

1. Am I in a healthy mental state?

2. Are my emotions high, low, or balanced?

3. Can I exercise self-control?
