Welcome to the 43rd episode of Let’s Unpack That! We’re two friends, Cal and Chevall, who decided to start a podcast where we analyze media under a critical, appreciative lens. To start, we’re reading the legendary manga Berserk together for the first time and recording our reactions, analysis and BSing about the manga from the late Kentaro Miura, who died May 6, 2021 at the age of 54.
This week, Cal and Chevall take a break from the usual Berserk chapters to discuss “fridging” in the wake of the eclipse where Casca was raped by Griffith/Femto. We discuss iconic and disappointing fictional moments of fridging as well as our take on the concept as a whole. Enjoy this extra long discussion before we get back to Berserk next episode!
What is “fridging?” The trope, which we discuss at length in this episode, was described by Gail Simone (the comic writer who coined the term) as such:“These are superheroines who have been either depowered, raped, or cut up and stuck in the refrigerator. I know I missed a bunch. Some have been revived, even improved -- although the question remains as to why they were thrown in the wood chipper in the first place.”
