Team GB Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes wants to get us moving more, and discusses with Phil the urgent need for increased awareness of the threat that physical inactivity plays to the nation’s health and wellbeing both in the short and long term.
While we are moving 18 minutes more per week than in 2022 - averaging 83 minutes of moderate exercise a week - almost 3 in 4 of us are still not reaching the NHS's recommended 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week while a third have not dedicated any time to vigorous exercise in the past 12 months, according to healthcare charity Nuffield Health research which shows 53% of us cite a lack of motivation as the main barrier to us not pursuing more regular exercise with other barriers including misconceptions around what counts as exercise and the common belief that people living with injuries or long-term conditions should not be moving at all.
Physical inactivity is one of the key risk factors for developing long term conditions with 37% aware exercise can lower the risk of early death by up to 30% and 39% knowing exercise can reduce your risk of illness, including heart disease and cancer, by up to half. Worryingly, a fifth of us have done no exercise at all in the last 12 months and almost 4 in 5 (79%) fail to meet the recommended 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week.
