All around the city of Jakarta, new shopping malls have sprouted everywhere since the early 1990s, a testament both to the booming economy and consumer demand. Following the economic crisis of 1997 and the subsequent political change in the following years, mall construction paused temporarily but has rapidly recovered with the return of Chinese capital from abroad.
