160. LU at the Movies: El Cid (1961)
This week we settle in to talk movies; specifically, the 1961 historical epic 'El Cid'. Directed by Anthony Mann, and produced by Franco-collaborator Samuel Bronston, this hard-to-find technicolor classic is a prime example of political propaganda on the big screen. Shot largely on-scene in Spain, with 60's heavy-hitters Charlton Heston and Sofia Loren leading a cast that included hundreds of actual Francoist soldiers on loan as extras, there was plenty to admire and critique in equal measure.
