Episode #2 - Coach John Potenza: Journey into Catch Wrestling
John is a lifetime martial artist with many achievements under his belt. He started as a striker in his younger years and then fell in love with Catch Wrestling. John still studies and coaches the striking aspect of martial arts and has a gym in Prescott, AZ called Average Joe's MMA.
He talks about his childhood and how he got started in martial arts and how eventually he took that leap of faith into running his own gyms full time. Gives a story of how he started train under an amazing practitioner of Erik Paulson. He gives pointers on opening up a gym from the ground up and lessons he learned on going toe to toe with Corporate type places (ie. UFC Gym and LA Boxing). Also how he has expanded into the online coaching to spread his love of Catch wrestling that he learned from Billy Robinson. John has a huge heart for giving back to his community through the teachings of Martial Arts and a solid coach for both MMA and Catch Wrestling.
Two Books John Mentioned:
The Book of Five Rings, by Miyamoto Musashi
Zen in the Martial Arts, by Joe Hyams
Please check out his sites and shoot him an email if your interested in the Catch World (The True Dark Side of Grappling).
This can be done through his Online program too. Nothing can replace mat time but this is an awesome way into learning if no gyms around are teaching Catch.
