If every buzz, badge, and Wordle streak has you checking your phone like it’s your job—well, you’re not alone. And if you are a lawyer, it kind of IS your job. Between clients, courts, and colleagues, being “always on” can feel like the only option. But what if you could make a few simple tweaks to reclaim your attention (and maybe your sanity)? In this episode, we talk with Steve Pratt—author, entrepreneur, and podcast expert—about his personal mission to break up (a little) with his phone. We wanted to hear from him about the real-life experiment he has been running as part of his "Midlife Field Guide" project, to see how small, intentional changes can free up more time and make those hours actually feel good. In our conversation, we dive into how technology messes with our brains, what’s at stake when we never unplug, and why it’s surprisingly hard to scroll less. And yes, we laugh—a lot—because if you can’t laugh about your screen addiction, what can you laugh about? Full credit to Steve for the title of this episode, which came from his excellent Midlife Field Guide experiment and Substack posts recording the journey: https://www.midlifefieldguide.com/.

Shelter from the Storm: Finding Solace in Difficult Times
In this week’s episode, we seek solace in chaotic times. We talk movies, books, poems, music and… doing the right thing when it counts! Seems these things are connected. Mike’s question this week (inspired by the amazing Vibe Check podcast): what movies, books, music or other materials serve as touchstones, showing us the ground is not necessarily shifting beneath our feet as much as it feels. We talk Jerry Maguire (briefly! And OF COURSE!) but also our other favourite movies from childhood. By the end, we find ourselves asking our lawyerly listeners to go back to their own touchstones, and maybe give some thought to why we all went to law school in the first place. Yes, we go a bit deep in this one! Mike even reads a poem! And as always, there are our goods and gripes. Darlene is happy about her fiery immunity juice, but probably should not have been drinking it prior to the pod. Mike is happy about taking a trip, and getting out of his usual surroundings, but has some reservations. Tune in towards the end for our gripes. Join us! And if you’re a fan of the pod, please subscribe to our YouTube channel (even if you don’t watch the episode there, you’ll see our “shorts” from time to time). You can also find us on Spotify, Instagram (@lawyerlifepod), and wherever else you listen to audio podcasts. If you can take a second to like, rate, or review the pod, we will be eternally grateful.
