Hi. My name is David Pitts. I am a public school educator who has worked with Emergent Bilingual, ESL or EL students for seventeen years. I want to share information for parents to understand how schools support English Learner students and how you can be the best advocate for your child. I also have interests in language, philosophy and legal precedent as it relates to language and education in the United States. All of these important topics have direct impact on the education of the earliest of learners. In summary, good language education leads to peace. Follow along.

ESL and Bilingual Program Services Models

In this episode, I will describe two of the most common forms of ESL service models, Pull Out and Content Based. I will also describe the difference between Transitional and Maintenance Bilingual Models as well as the distinction between One Way and Two Way Bilingual education.

If you have a student who is an Emergent Bilingual, it is important to understand the service model your school employs so you can understand the structure and goals of the model and how it may or may not benefit your student.
