Whole Systems Design + Buckminster Fuller

In this episode, I am highlighting the interdisciplinary work of Buckminster Fuller and his emphasis on whole systems design. His approach of doing more with less has had a huge impact on folks both within and outside of Permaculture Design practice - including myself long before I heard the word Permaculture, I learned about Bucky Fuller, Geodesic domes, the Whole Earth Catalog and the whole systems design movement of the early & mid 20th Century. I also really identified with his discipline of learning for oneself, from direct experience - He states that "man must learn to think for himself, rather than follow blindly what he has been taught." I hope enjoy another show digging into the roots of Permaculture...

About the Show:

  • 01:00 - 01:38: Intellectual Outlaw
  • 01:38 - 05:02: 3 Minutes w/ Bucky Fuller
  • 05:02 - 01:00:11: 1974 Interview
  • 01:00:11 - 01:08:15: Doing more with less
  • 01:08:15: - 01:11:57: Do your own thinking

R. Buckminster Fuller was a renowned 20th century inventor and visionary. Dedicating his life to making the world work for all of humanity, Fuller operated as a practical philosopher who demonstrated his ideas as inventions that he called “artifacts.” Fuller did not limit himself to one field but worked as a 'comprehensive anticipatory design scientist' to solve global problems surrounding housing, shelter, transportation, education, energy, ecological destruction, and poverty.

“I AM NOW CLOSE TO 88 and I am confident that the only thing important about me is that I am an average healthy human. I am also a living case history of a thoroughly documented, half-century, search-and-research project designed to discover what, if anything, an unknown, moneyless individual, with a dependent wife and newborn child, might be able to do effectively on behalf of all humanity that could not be accomplished by great nations, great religions or private enterprise, no matter how rich or powerfully armed.” —Bucky Fuller

Throughout the course of his life Fuller held 28 patents, authored 28 books, received 47 honorary degrees. Fuller's true impact on the world today can be found in his continued influence upon generations of designers, architects, scientists and artists working to create a more sustainable planet...Learn more, watch the videos from the audio clips, and get a free download of his book Grunch of Giants here >
