Kurilka vostfaka

This episode is dedicated to the art of Islamic countries. My guest Mikhail Grachev, a researcher from the University of Vienna and former curator of Hermitage museum in Saint Petersburg, gratifies my curiosity by answering the following questions: Why one studies art? Is the perception of beauty universal among different peoples? What traces of the Islamic influence do we witness in Saint Petersburg and Venice? How should we treat the colonial legacy in European museums? Is there such thing as "Islamic" art at all? We speak of various dimensions of this phenomenon and invite you to join us in this charming journey. At the end Mikhail suggests a reading list on Islamic decorative art, architecture, and miniature.

Both of us, Valeria and Mikhail, are alumnis of the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Saint Petersburg University. We studied history of Iran and Afghanistan and Iranian philology respectively.

The episode is presented in Russian. The podcast's 1st season is available here
