EN - Okwui Okpokwasili debuted Bronx Gothic in 2014. In it, and alone on stage, she unveiled the hidden narrative of two black girls growing up in the Bronx in the 80s: in the space of a curtained room, the audience is drawn into their shared secrets. Built upon an exchange of notes between the two girls in the midst of a sexual awakening, Bronx Gothic looks to communicate what is essential about a body in transformation and the love, strangeness and terror that accompany it.

FR - Okwui Okpokwasili a créé Bronx Gothic en 2014. Elle y dévoile le récit qui se cache derrière deux amies, deux jeunes filles noires, grandissant dans le Bronx des années 1980. Dans une pièce aux rideaux tirés, le public est témoin de leur intimité. Constitué de notes échangées entre les deux adolescentes au moment de leur éveil sexuel, Bronx Gothic cherche à transmettre ce qui est essentiel dans un corps en mutation et les énergies qui le traversent : l’amour, l’étrangeté et la terreur qui l’accompagnent.

NL - Okwui Okpokwasili creëerde Bronx Gothic oorspronkelijk in 2014. Geïnspireerd op een briefwisseling tussen twee zwarte meisjes in vol seksueel ontwaken, communiceert de voorstelling het essentiële van een lichaam in transformatie en de energieën die daarmee gepaard gaan: liefde, vervreemding en angst. In een met gordijnen omwikkelde ruimte is het publiek getuige van een bijzondere intimiteit uit de Bronx van de jaren ’80.
