"Every story I weave together or lovingly transcribe is like a katana forged in fire and ice; stories are meant to be relied on for life." Stories embody our existence: happiness, tragedies, solace, heroes, villains, and poetry. May the flame of storytelling never extinguish." –Komal Salman
Our guest on the last conversation of our first season is none other than Komal Salman, the founder of Folkloristan, an international digital storytelling platform dedicated to history and culture.
She graduated from NUST earlier this year with a bachelor's degree. Her professional background involves graphic design, data visualisation, and digital illustration. She currently works in the niche of tech policy as the Advocacy Lead for Web 3.0 at the Islamabad Policy Research Institute.
In this episode, Komal joins us to talk about her journey, which began with collecting around 100 stories from Twitter and finding funds to publish her first official website.
She also shares the depth of her self-discovery and creative imagination, as well as her opinions on professionalism, calling it both an artist's best and worst friend. She also reveals her lessons from 2022, the learning process, unlearning and relearning, and much more!
Keeping culture and society a part of our conversation, we briefly discussed the importance of faith for children from a sociological and philosophical view and whether we should engage in selective activism while coexisting.
Komal's crucial statement that "history is always written by the winners" and that to have a truthful point of view on any historical event, you need to learn it from all angles represents her shift of perspective on history curriculum in Pakistani schools.
Make sure to listen to the entire episode because Komal's wit and humour makes it all more interesting and enlightening to learn that women should be able to discover and explore the creative mindsets that thrive and inspire them to embrace the power to fully express themselves through art and storytelling. Please enjoy! And a huge thank you to Kalimat's listeners! We're not done yet; stay tuned for the spectacular finale soon!
