With the U.S. reducing its military presence in the Levant to a fraction compared to the massive footprint it had in the region during the campaigns in Iraq and against Daesh, and with Russia preoccupied with its failed war in Ukraine, it would seem unlikely that tensions between the two powers would rise here, away from the European Theatre of Operations. Yet this is what happened, when Russian pilots flew too close for comfort to American planes over Syria, and American patrols came under fire by Russian-affiliated groups. Is it by design or neglect, and can it escalate further into a major confrontation?
Host - Col. (Res.) Reuven Ben-Shalom, TV7 Powers-in-Play Panelist, Cross-Cultural Strategist and Associate at ICT, Reichman University
Panel:
1. Col. (Ret.) Dr. Eran Lerman, Co-host TV7 Middle East Review, Powers-in-Play Panelist, JISS VP and Editor in Chief of the Jerusalem Strategic Tribune
2. Brigadier General (Res.) Doron Gavish, Former Air Defense Chief, Israel Air Force
3. Analyst Mr. Amir Oren

TV7 Europa Stands: A Clash of Civilizations amid Strategic Competition - June 2023
The fundamental source of conflict in this new world will not be primarily ideological or primarily economic. Rather, as Samuel Huntington asserted in his book Clash of civilizations, “The great divisions among humankind and the dominating source of conflict will be cultural. Nation-states will remain the most powerful actors in world affairs, but the principal conflicts of global politics will occur between nations and groups of different civilizations.” Moreover, “the clash of civilizations will dominate global politics. The fault lines between civilizations will be the battle lines of the future.”
Twenty-seven years after this hypothesis was initially published, one may evaluate whether the world at large, and Europe in particular, is indeed embroiled in a clash of civilizations – as this view (which carries with it far-reaching ramifications) is increasingly adopted by global political and military leaders.
Panel:
- Jonathan Hessen: Host.
- Gen. Klaus Naumann, Former Chief of General Staff of the Bundeswehr as well as the Chairman of NATO Military Committee.
- Prof. Jacek Czaputowicz, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland.
- Mr. Timo Soini, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of Finland.
- Prof. Miro Kovac, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Croatia.
