Should You Diversify Your Credit Card Points?

Credit card points are rewards you earn for everyday spending. To diversify your points means collecting rewards across multiple ecosystems.

Here I break down the pros and cons and when it makes sense to diversify. Enjoy!

 00:00 Intro
Are you hoarding points across Chase, Amex, Capital One, and Citi—hoping to score that dream vacation? But wait… is spreading your points actually helping you—or hurting your rewards strategy? Today, we’re answering a simple but powerful question: Should you diversify your credit card points? Let’s break it down.

01:03 What Are Credit Card Points?
Credit card points are rewards you earn for everyday spending. But not all points are created equal. Some are bank-specific, like Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards. Others are co-branded, tied to airlines or hotels like Delta Skymiles or Marriott Bonvoy.

01:35 What does Diversification Mean?
To diversify your points means collecting rewards across multiple ecosystems. One person might have an Amex Gold for groceries, a Chase Sapphire Preferred for travel, and a Capital One Venture X for general spending—racking up points in three different programs.

02:00 Pros of Diversifying Points
So, why diversify at all?
More Transfer Partners – Each program has unique airline and hotel partners. Diversifying means flexibility.
Category Optimization – You can earn more by using the best card for each category.
Backup Options – If one program devalues or changes rules, you’re not stuck.

02:48 Cons of Diversifying Points
But diversification isn’t always a win.
Diluted Value – You may end up with small balances in many programs, which are harder to use.
Redemption Headaches – Booking award travel with multiple programs can get messy.
Annual Fees – Holding multiple premium cards adds up—fast

03:22 When It Makes Sense To Diversify
If you’re a travel hacker or a rewards optimizer, having multiple programs makes sense. You can cherry-pick the best redemptions.
But if you’re a casual user, focusing on one ecosystem—like Chase or Amex—might be smarter. Simpler, easier, and still powerful.

03:48 Hybrid Strategy
Consider a hybrid strategy:
Primary program – Put most of your spend here.
Secondary – Use for bonus categories or specific redemptions.

Avoid spreading too thin. It’s like investing—diversify just enough, but stay focused.
