Looking at the value of agriculture to the GPD of African countries, the number varies from 4% to more than 40%, with many countries relying on agriculture for at least one-third of their GPD.  No wonder that governments are keen to develop protection programmes for this vital sector.  But how does agriculture insurance function and what are the typical claims experienced across the continent?
