Aufgabe des IfM Bonn ist es, die Lage, Entwicklung und Probleme des Mittelstands zu erforschen. Diese Aufgaben erfüllt das Institut in einer praxisorientierten Weise. Zum einen bereitet es umfangreiches statistisches Datenmaterial zum Mittelstand auf Basis amtlicher, halbamtlicher sowie eigens erhobener Daten auf. Zum anderen bearbeitet es wissenschaftliche Fragestellungen mittels empirischer Forschungsmethoden und erstellt Gutachten zu aktuellen mittelstandspolitischen Fragestellungen.
