Note from Inspire: This episode contains a discussion of sexual assault and suicide.
Today’s guest will share with you the power of forgiveness to heal and to find peace despitehorrific circumstances.
After keeping silent for 38 years, Madeleine Black shares her heartbreaking story of being gang raped at 13, in her best-selling book ‘Unbroken.’ Now an international speaker including two TedX talks, she has found her voice and purpose at 51, to ‘Speak Up’ and by doing so giving permission for others tofind their voice as well.
So what did it take to get to this point of peace and forgiveness?
• From being the ‘good’ girl one day and then the ‘troubled teen’ the next, she was admitted to a children’s psychiatric ward but no-one asked, “what happened to you?”
• Suffocated by guilt and shame believing she “bought this on herself,” to recognising the societal narrative of ‘victim blaming’ and becoming a voice for change.
• From being fearful of men to making a conscious decision to only work with male clients and face her fear head on.
• From fantasising about revenge to discovering the greatest revenge of all is reclaiming your power and leading a fulfilling and happy life.
Madeline’s story illustrates there is life after severe trauma, you can heal and you can find peace.
“It's not what happens to us that is important, it’s what we do with what happens to us…If we choose to.”
