Behind every capture, there is an often-untold story. The world of street photography is one of the most challenging yet rewarding forms of photographic expression. While we focus on getting the shot, what interests me the most is what goes on inside our heads before and after the shutter is released. This is a new podcast, and it will develop and evolve in time, I am hopeful that the topics, ideas, and interviews that are covered will be of interest to you. If you have any suggestions, please reach out to me at insidestreetphotography@gmail.com or leave a voice message via Spotify!

The Creative Life Conundrum

Happy New Year ISP Nation! I'm very excited to publish the very first episode of the year, hoping to record regularly for all of 2025 and beyond!

In this episode, I discuss the problems that I am having with working 100% in the creative space, and how it has taken away from the pleasure of shooting street (or any other type of photography) for personal enjoyment.

Please let me know where in the world you're from in the comments! I appreciate you!

Video: Exploring Boston, MA

I am going in a new direction, introducing video to this podcast. Whenever possible, I will post videos such as this one to explore and expand our view of street photography and to take us worldwide to new and different places. I hope you like this video, and if you do, please reach out to me to let me know what you think.

Walking the streets in search of great captures is one of the great pleasures of my life, but being able to document it makes the experience much more enjoyable and memorable.  On February 12th last month, I met with a few fellow street photographers in Boston and had an absolute blast. I only knew one of the three, and I felt an instant bond with everyone - good, kind, talented, salt-of-the-earth people.  I hope this video becomes one of many more as I grow this project and get my YouTube channel off the ground.

I would be very grateful if you kindly consider subscribing to my YouTube channel. Please visit www.youtube.com/@insidestreetphotography and click on the bell! In time, I hope to travel the world doing this, and your support is my fuel to keep it going!

And don't forget I also have a private Facebook group that can be found at www.facebook.com/groups/insidestreetphotography

Quiet Towns and Rural Areas

Street photography has long been associated with the bustling energy of urban environments, where every corner presents a new story waiting to be told. However, venturing into small towns and rural areas unveils a different but equally compelling narrative. Amidst the serene landscapes and tight-knit communities, photographers find a unique charm that beckons exploration. Yet, shooting street photography in such settings comes with its own set of challenges and rewards.

A cat is not street photography?
In today's episode, we have a deep and heated discussion about a photograph of a cat that I posted on a prominent international street photography Facebook page, and their decision to reject it because "animal photography is not street photography". The cat was captured in the context of an old medieval town in the beautiful region of Abruzzo, where I grew up as a young lad. I expand on the context of the photo in my podcast discussion, but I would love to get your perspective on the matter. Please visit www.insidestreetphotography.com and click on Quick Links to access the ISP Facebook Private Group page. I hope you will join us in the conversation! I will post the photo that I am discussing, and the response from the Facebook page admin.

Do You Chimp?

Chimping refers to immediately reviewing your photos on the camera's LCD screen after taking a shot. While it can be tempting to chimp in various photography situations, including street photography, there are several reasons to avoid it, and that is what we discuss in today's episode. Let's talk about it!

Perspectives on Street Photography and the Homeless

Street photographers are often criticized for "exploiting"the homeless, yet we hold an important role in society. In the latest episode of Inside Street Photography with Joe DiMeo, we delve into the powerful and thought-provoking world of street photographers who capture the lives and stories of the homeless.

How can we use our craft to amplify the voices of those who are often unheard and unseen? Our images not only capture the harsh realities of homelessness but also reveal the resilience, strength, and humanity that persist in the face of adversity. I learned about this through my encounter with Maurice, a homless person in Boston.

Whether you're a photography enthusiast, an advocate for social change, or simply curious about the power of art to drive empathy and action, I hope this episode will leave you inspired and moved.

Tune in and embark on a journey that challenges preconceptions, stirs emotions, and reminds us all that we are brothers and sisters in this world.

An Episode Inspired by a Phenomenal Book Recommendation

During a conversation with my friend, fellow photographer, and ISP Italia ambassador Luca Parizzi, (please follow him on Instagram at @parizziluca and @insidestreetphotographyitalia), he highly recommended that I purchase a street photography book called Magnum Streetwise. Well, I ordered it on the spot, and luckily Amazon had it at my doorstep within 24 hours.

I also had the pleasure of chatting with fellow street photographer Peter Mockers of Belgium (please consider following him on Instagram @petermockers). Peter was kind and frank enough to point out that my last episode was too long and that I needed to increase my publishing frequency, and ... I wholeheartedly agree with him!

So here I am - a shorter episode -while also attempting to be more focused and concise - though I think I failed - but I'm aware, and I'm working to fix it! A great big thank you to Peter for feeding me with much-needed input to attempt to make this podcast the premier place for street photography discussions! Let's talk!

Online Trolls, Listener Appreciation, and More!

Happy day, everyone. My name is Joe DiMeo, and I am the host of the ISP podcast, where we delve deeply into the psyche of the street photographer and what goes on deep inside of us before, during, and after the click. On today's episode, we discuss my experience with some Facebook group trolls, the ugly side of being a street photographer, some ISP project information updates, the growing podcast listener community, and more.

Please consider subscribing to the podcast and sharing it with other fellow street photographers if you like what you hear!

Should there be an interest, I also started a YouTube channel and a Facebook Private Group. They are both in the infancy stages, but with your help, we will be able to elevate this project to one of the best street photography communities on earth.

Europe, Here I Come ... but How Do I Pack for 3 Weeks?

At the beginning of October 2023, I will be heading to Europe with my daughter, and we will be spending three beautiful weeks visiting England, France, and Italy! Blending family with street photography is difficult, and trying to pack in the most minimalist way possible can be challenging as well. Photography is one thing, but once you start introducing video into the mix, then things get a bit more complex. Well, that's what I am here to discuss on today's show, so let's talk!
