INDIEcent Exposure #45: NTRVW — ETHeGirl

Heya, Brothers and Sisters!

Thanks for tuning in to Episode 45 of INDIEcent Exposure. I am your master of ceremonies, the mongrel, and I have to say, this is an episode of INDIEcent Exposure like no other that’s come before or probably that will ever follow. We will start off with a couple of great tunes I’ve been meaning to share with you but, the bulk of this extended episode will be an interview that I had with the brilliant, talented, brassy, sassy, and lovely actress, singer, model and crypto-entrepreneur, Sarah Marie, a.k.a. Ethegirl.

'nexions

ETHegirl at OpenSeaETHegirl at InstagramETHegirl on TwitterAlbum: The Fire, by Kendra BlackTrack: "Ghost," by ALI3N SUP3R J3SUS

The main topic of our conversation was meant to be all about her new collection of highly stylized NFTs, inspired by pin-up art of yore but radiating with a powerful nd competent femininity that is finally getting the appreciating it deserves in more areas of professional and public life. What actually happened is that we talked about absolutely everything under the sun, and I had the opportunity to find out just what a multifaceted talent she is. We talked dogs. We talked personal safety. We talked family dynamics. We talked hunting and gaming and living and loving and trying to hustle a comfortable place for yourself on this planet at the near edge of Armageddon.

As I said, I’ve never brought you a conversation like this before, and I did NOT edit for length because when you’re hearing about her in the mainstream media, I want you to be able to say, “Yeah, I knew all about her good shit back in the day.” While you’re listening you should really take in her gallery of NFTs so you can get a sense of just what and who I’m talking about. There’s a link at the top of the shownotes, but if you’re not able to read the show notes on your podcatcher of choice, the link is opensea.io/ETHegirl  —  again, that’s opensea.io/ETHegirl

And we’ll roll that interview right after we roll a track from another of my favorite ladies, Kendra Black who released the album The Fire in 2019. For those of you who heard my interview with her, you know that there are many sides to her as well, but we’ll stick to her music right now with the tune “I’m better,” right here on INDIEcent Exposure.

INDIEcent Exposure #44:feat. Yard of Blondes

Hey, hey, hey, my INDIEcent brothers and sisters. Thanks for tuning in to Episode #44 of INDIEcent Exposure. I've got some killer tunes lined up for you, and I guess I was in the mood for music that rides a little harder, because these tracks definitely don't show the softer side of yours truly, your host, the mongrel, known in an alternet zip code as Jay V.

I've got another great interview, with a great artist, waiting in the wings, but right now let's kick things off with some tunage. We'll hear from Imran Mandani, who conjures up Godzilla, Kim Logan, who warns us that Oedipus Wrecks, and Gürschach, who take us on a tour of their Undead Empire. First though, let's start this set off with an amazing Pop and Neo-Soul artist who hails from Georgia — And I don't mean the state that sits between Alabama and South Carolina.

SALIO

SALIO hails from the Republic of Georgia, a place known to some for its harmonic scales and the birthplace of wine, but not by most. A remarkably gifted vocalist and composer from a young age, she decided to leave her home country and find her place in the wider world.

A lot of reasons for that, but probably the biggest is an onslaught of debilitating depression that affected nearly every area of my life. And with depression came doubts. And with doubts came delays. And then dust began to settle. Which depressed the fuck out of me even more. I’ve successfully battled this demon for, God, decades, and it hasn’t been this bad since way back in some very dark times. And I know I’m not alone out there. So many of my friends, especially my creative, artistic friends, fight the same demon, and this pandemic has been emotional quicksand.

Actually, that would be 42 counts of INDIEcent Exposure, seeing as how this is episode #42. It is I, brothers and sisters, your humble host, the mongrel, bringing you another amazing show — not for any talent I may or mayn’t bring to the table, oh, no, no, no.

This show is all about the tunes. And the tune makers. I’m just driving this rig. And after long and careful consideration, and input from YOU, my faithful listeners, I’ve decided that I need to drive this rig a little faster from now on. Get to the tunes faster, and keep the episodes as close to the 30-minute mark as possible.

Gina Brooklyn (2:15)

But don’t worry. You won’t get less of me if you don’t want. I have plans. We’ll talk about them later. Not now. Now we hear from Gina Brooklyn, whose raw power will make you prick up your ears. Her March 2020 single, “Who Are You Fighting For” is exactly the sort of scorcher that may help us all get through the rest of 2020.

INDIEcent Exposure #41:Navigating a Charming Disaster

Welcome my INDIEcent brothers and sisters to Episode #41 of this musical carnival of dreams, INDIEcent Exposure. I am your host, the mongrel, and, as always, I thank you for tuning in.  And you can tune in to hear the best in new Indie tunes and news through Apple Podcasts. Google Podcasts, and now Spotify. Subscribe and never miss your music fix.

In addition to eight great tracks spanning several genre, I had a great interview with a brilliant duo unexpectedly drop into my lap this week. I think my conversation with Brooklyn-based, Charming Disaster, will more than make up for the lack of one last week. Their new album, SPELLS + RITUALS, just came out, and carries on their craft of spinning whimsically dark, slightly unhinged, stories through song. Although their summer tour has been scotched due to the pandemic, you can catch them outdoors at The Foundry, West Stockbridge, Massachusetts August 7th and 8th, if you happen to be in the neighborhood. I happen to know it’s a great space, a really great venue, so even it’s a bit of a haul for you, what the hell, make a weekend of it. Worse places to be in summer than the Berkshires. Ticket info available in the shownotes.

WELL! I’ve got so, so many great tunes that I wanted to share with you and zero self-control. Makes for a bit of a bloated episode this week, but I doubt you’ll mind. I’ve been cutting back on carbs, so maybe this is my way of filling that pasta hole, I don’t know. But let’s get to it right now with a couple artists who showed up on my radar just in the last little while.

Best Not Broken (6:53)

Ever since the launch of my first podcast, featuring Beantown artists, I’ve always been a sucker for a great Boston band. So there’s a familiar comfort to the sounds of the 2016 New England Music Awards winner, Best Not Broken. Their blend of rock and power pop is infectious, and the lyrics are wicked smaht — all evident in the single, “Red Flags,” released in late 2019. They’ve shared stages with such diverse greats as Pat Benetar to Jason Derulo.

INDIEcent Exposure #40:11 tracks from all over the map

Hey, whazzup, dogs? Thanks for tuning in to Episode #40 of INDIEcent Exposure. I’m your host, the mongrel, and this week’s show is absolutely bustin’ at the seams with great tunes. I love featuring interviews, but I also kinda love an episode that’s just front to back music. In fact, I’m going to save the opening monologue and get straight to a block of tunes I’ve been waiting forever to unpack.

Editor's Note: Musicians' bio info comes from the artists, their websites, or their publicists. Click on names below to visit their websites where you can get the full story, photos, and very often video.

Singer songwriter, and rising Dark Pop phenom, Annelie Elina, splits her time between Los Angeles and her native county of Sweden. She brings us the track “Recover” from her latest  EP Purity. Despite the name, and despite her tender young age of sixteen, do NOT be fooled. It’s a welcome relief from the cotton candy tracks being spun in other sectors of the pop world. Or rather, if her wispy trilling tricks you into thinking you’ll be tasting sweet fluff, a couple of earfuls quickly educate your soundbuds that the gossamer strains carry flavors of longing, disillusionment, fearlessness, uncertainty, self-assurance, and vulnerability. This release represents a very, very promising start to the career of a new artist.

I have, as my special guest, rapper 2Toaster Los, who spoke to me last month from New Jersey State Prison, where he was serving the last two weeks of a sentence that ran just under eleven years. He was released on Juneteenth, and I’m betting it’ll be a holiday he remembers vividly. We'll spin his track, "That's What I Like." PLUS, I've also got new tracks from four other artists you should be paying attention to.

Welcome, my INDIEcent, yet faithful, legions of music addicts, to episode number 38 of INDIEcent Exposure. I am you host the mongrel — known in an alternate zip code as Jay Vee.

Before we get into this week’s episode, I want to remind you to subscribe to this podcast in Apple Music, Google Play Music, or via your podcatcher of choice. And if you have an extra 30 seconds, leave us a five star rating and review — that really, really helps new listeners discover us. We work hard to help promote the Indie music scene, and you can too by turning people on to INDIEcent Exposure.

While musicians get the lion’s share of attention on this show, I should remind you all that the podcast was also constructed as a home of Indie creators in performing arts, literature, game development, and most definitely film. And this episode is just the show to remind me how much more we should be doing to support those brave, starving artists.

So, in addition to great new music, we’ll be hearing from Phil Hawkins, director of the original, yet painstakingly faithful, derivative work of film, STAR WARS: ORIGINS. He’s done a mind-bending job, both with good, old-fashioned story telling and with state of the art effects unusual in short, independent films. I wouldn’t blame you if you scrolled down to the embedded trailer straightaway to see what I’m talking about. During this episode, I’ll play clips from my conversation with this up and coming director. Later on, I’ll let you know how to hear our whole discussion. He’s a fascinating personality in the film world today, and I know you’ll be hearing more about his work in the near future.

Welcome, Indie music fans from Greylock Nation and around the world to Episode #37 of INDIEcent Exposure. I'm your host, the mongrel, and, as always, I'll be treating you to some of the most brilliant and freshest tracks to be found in the indiesphere.

Editor's Note: In the audio for this episode, I misidentified Sam Miller's brand new release as an eponymous album. The album's correct name is In One Place at a Time. Also note that all artist bios are made available courtesy the artists.

The Holiday Sounds of Josh Rouse

I want to extend a hale and hearty welcome to the thousands of independent music artists who’ve arrived here from ReverbNation.com. Today, however, we have a real treat of an interview with a veteran of the music scene who has just released an album that’s been a first of it’s kind for him, but which has been in the works for close to a decade. Josh Rouse fought back the fog that comes from international travel and spoke to us by Skype just after he’d returned from Spain where he’d debuted “The Holiday Sounds of Josh Rouse.”

We get a surprising number of holiday music submissions of all genres each year. Most of the tunes are covers, and some are really good. Some are kinda painful to listen to, to be honest. What distinguishes this latest project by Josh Rouse is that he rushed nothing. Each tune has been crafted with artistry and imagination. Josh will be playing the HiLo North Adams, Mass, Sunday, December 15 at 7:00 p.m. If you’re in the area, I really hope you drop by.

PLUS: Eight other artists you should give a listen to.  * EXPLICIT * (but just a tiny bit...)

Welcome, Indie music fans from around the world to Episode #35 of INDIEcent Exposure. I'm your host, the mongrel, and, as always, I'll be spinning you a wide selection of choice tracks from far flung locales and genres.

We speak with Michael Timmins of legendary alt-rock-country-blues-folk act Cowboy Junkies this past week as the band gets ready to do a micro Northeast U.S. tour.

Your ears did NOT deceive you if you thought you heard the voice of Michael Timmins during the cold open. This amazingly talented member of legendary alt-rock-blues-folk act Cowboy Junkies spoke with us this past week as the band gets ready to do a micro Northeast U.S. tour. We'll be hearing about 12 or 13 minutes of our talk on this episode, in addition to a couple tracks off their recent release, All that Reckoning, right here on this episode.

Greylock Glass members at the Zinger level (a mere $5/month) have access toour full-length conversation with Michael Timmins of Cowboy Junkies. Your support is what allows us to keep this alternative newsthing alive, so please consider becoming a member at greylockglass.com/membership .

We'll get to our chat with Michael Timmins and the tunes in just a bit, but first, let's open this show with a group we've heard from before — Racoon Racoon, from France, by way of Los Angeles, has just released another single, "Thunderbird." And if I've been accused of not having a softer side, well, I guess featuring this track puts the lie to that notion. So wistful and sweet, you just about have either to start with it or end with it, so here's "Thunderbird," on INDIEcent Exposure.

A little like a tune out of time, right? Again that's "Thunderbird" by Racoon Racoon.

IE #34: HiLo North Adams — a resurrection of space and sound

You are listening to INDIEcent Exposure, this is Episode #34 and I am your host, the mongrel, welcoming you to another great show. It’s packed some with amazing tracks, some brand new and some that just stand the test of time.

Brian Miksic, standing on the balcony off the Green Room at HiLo North Adams, overlooking Union Street; photo and image effects by Jason Velázquez.

We’ll be hearing from Larisa Santiago, A Permanent Shadow, Dylan in the Movies, and more. We’ll also be hearing from two individuals who came together to do something highly unusual in this day and age — Orion Howard and Brian Miksic talk about what went into the opening of the brand spanking new live music venue, HiLo North Adams. Crazy, right? Opening a club in the Netflix and chill era? Maybe not, since the space was at capacity for the private opening performance of Izzy Heltai this Thursday, 8/29. Tickets for shows in the near future are also sold out, so I guess people will get off the couch and out the house if you give them a primo entertainment in a cozy place to play.

We don’t have audio from opening night, but if you go to the shownotes for this episode, you can gaze at the photo of Izzy Heltai and his band breaking in the HiLo’s brand new stage. And if you do that while I spin you “Stuck in Stone” off his 2019 EP, Only Yesterday, you might even feel almost like you were there.

For Heltai’s show, the audience space was set up as a chill music cafe with small tables and chairs, which reduces the maximum capacity, but creates a very intimate mood. The band was amped, but I almost wonder if they had to be, the acoustics in the room are that good. INDIEcent Exposure #33: INTERVIEW —Kevin Connelly of Iron Age Mystics

PLUS: Six other artists you should be listening to.  * EXPLICIT *

Welcome, my INDIEcent legions of new music addicts, to episode number 33 of INDIEcent Exposure. I am you host the mongrel — every bit as INDIEcent on the inside as I am on the out. You may be wondering, ”What the hell have I signed up for with this episode? Is the mongrel going to push some history lesson on us? Nahhh…well, actually yes and no.

What I really have in store for you is the long-awaited conversation with Kevin Connelly, lyricist and lead singer of the Iron Age Mystics — a band that perfectly personifies my own pissed-offedness with the system, except that they manage to channel my rage against the machina into coherent, harmonic anthems of resistance. Genuinely ass-kicking, politically aware Rock ’n’ Roll is so rare these days, you may feel subversive just humming the melodies once they get stuck in your head.

In this Episode

You can go back and read my review of their latest release, attached to Episode #29, but you’ll really get more out of hearing Connelly describe, in his own words, why the Iron Age Mystics have put out a collection of tracks almost guaranteed to put a watch order on their activities. The explanation is simple: freedom-loving artists have a responsibility to plant their art on the right side of history.

I’m going to do something kinda weird with this episode. I’ve never done this, but, because there’s kind of a flow to the discussion, instead of selecting some of the most delicious quotes my guest utters and sprinkling throughout the show (and Connelly utters rather a lot of very quotable things), instead of doing that, I’m going to play the first half of my conversation with Connelly during this episode. After you get finished with the episode,

INDIEcent Exposure #32: INTERVIEW — Zodiak, on Basement Brew

Welcome, lovers of Indie music the world over, to Episode number 32 of INDIEcent Exposure. I am the mongrel. One of the very special treats I have for you is actually kind of a retroactive clip of shame for me. I suffered a crash maybe a year and some ago and was sure that an interview I was wicked excited to record was lost forever. This week, cleaning out some back-up folders I came across a recovered mp3 of my conversation with a new icon of the DMV scene, Zodiak.

The recording required a bit of cleanup, and references to dated events have been edited out, but I knew I couldn’t wait another week to present it to you, along with two amazing tracks off their 2016 release Basement Brew. Humbly, with my mongrel tail between my legs, I offer my sincerest apologies to Zodiak, who deserved this feature long ago.

I think before we get to that interview, though, and their song “Waiting on Us” from that album, I’m gonna get our collective ears fired up with two tracks that hit my inbox just this week.

We’ll cock an ear towards Italy and have a taste of the track “Blue Curaçao, by Armonite off their new release, And the Stars Above. Composer Paolo Fosso and violinist Jacopo Bigi have known each other since they were were in bands together as teenagers, but split up for about fifteen years before applying their classical training to their reunified endeavor. I know you’re going to be blown away by their sound, and since I know you’re going to want to find out more about them, I’ve got links to their site in the show notes. But you knew I’d say that. I do that for all the artists on this show.

INDIEcent Exposure #31: Halie Loren — From the Wild Sky

Welcome brothers and sisters, to Episode #31 of INDIEcent Exposure, in which we share new music from, and our conversation with, Halie Loren, who's just released a solo effort, "From the Wild Sky." As if that weren't enough, we also feature tunes from Mikalyn Hay, Paper City Exile, The Slang, He Is Me, Onism EV, CATFOX, Bryan Deister, and Parsonsfield.

* See note on info sources at bottom.

The long-awaited solo project from Halie Loren, "From the Wild Sky," dropped at the end of April. Our obsession with these eleven tracks shows no sign of letting up; photo by Sally Sheldon.

Halie Loren

Check out her Kickstarter story — this is how you do it, baby!

From Halie Loren's bio:

Authenticity and connection have been essential roots of the artistic growth of Halie Loren. Whether injecting the American Songbook with old-school soul, or finding a familiar thread of nostalgia in newly-penned originals, the Alaskan-born, award-winning singer/songwriter continues to find new ways to bridge cultures and musical genres.

INTERVIEW — Listen to the full-length conversation with this player

Halie Loren is truly an international artist. Like her multi-lingual recordings that transcend cultural borders, her art transcends musical genres via a common thread that weaves a rich tapestry. That tapestry connects her original works with pop-smart jazz, flowing into blues, soul and contemporary compositions that are universal, yet deeply personal.

“For the past few years, I have felt more and more drawn to the idea of putting my songwriter self out there in a much bigger way, as a 100% personal form of expression,” explains Loren. “When I write, it's all about the story and the feelings behind it, but never about the particular style in which it takes shape.”

Halie Loren seizes the opportunity presented by her solo release to project some radical honesty, drawing from both personal and observed experience; photo by Bob Williams.

The result is art in an eclectic form, with soulful compositions reflecting wounded defiance, stubborn love and hard-earned hopefulness. Her voice connects to the soul of her song writing, reminding us that there is always beauty to be found, even in the most painful experiences. That powerful personal connection is the driving force behind From the Wild Sky, Halie’s latest and most ambitious album to date. The album, produced by Troy Miller, features 10 original compositions, as well as a stunning rendition of Roberto Livi’s "A Mi Manera."

“The songs on the album speak to some very meaningful, transformational moments in my life, some of which were inspired from experiencing new discoveries, love and deep loss,” Halie says. “It feels like the most risk-taking and honest art that I've ever created, reflecting my spirit and my personal story in a very revealing way.”

INDIEcent Exposure #29: Birds of Chicago, Iron Age Mystics & more

Birds of Chicago—Winter Migration

In this episode, we speak with JT Nero, who, along with Allison Russell, makes up the creative core of intracontinental Roots treasure: Birds of Chicago. We hear "Barley," "Dim Star of the Palisades," and "Kinderspel" (Child's Game) from their 2016 release, Real Midnight.

When we first made contact, JT and the band were making their way East in the bus, just passing through Gary, Indiana. Headed for the Word Cafe Live in Philly, the first stop on their 2017 tour, JT talked about where the creative fire all comes from, the band's origin story, their latest release, "Real Midnight," and what's in store for fans later this year (hint: summer release).

With limited East Coast dates on this tour, you're probably going to want to grab tickets now. if you want to see Birds of Chicago live (and you DO want to see Birds of Chicago live—I have it on good authority that the full band is on that bus). If you're a citizen of Greylock Nation, either the few openings left at The Parlor Room in Northampton, Mass., or at Hudson, New York's landmark venue Club Helsinki Hudson are probably your best bet. Of course, The West Coast dates are none too shabby, so if Spring in SoCal or Santa Cruz seems like a sweet dream to you, Birds of Chicago would make for one fine soundtrack.

And check out the Birds of Chicago YouTube page for a great video of Kinderspel.

Her absence from the conversation (she was holding down the fort at their shop in the MASS MoCA complex, Hudson's) is likely why we achieved so few of our already meager goals.

INDIEcent Exposure #26: Moon Hooch — ”Red Sky”

We didn't have time to set up an interview with Moon Hooch when they were in town last year, and we were darn lucky to catch James Muschler at a moment when the band was kind of (but not quite) stationary (they were going over a checklist before jumping back on the bus to start their new tour.

Brooklyn-based Moon Hooch, famous for their high-energy, danceable percussion/saxophone music, is comprised of James Muschler, Mike Wilbur, and Wenzl McGowen (submited photo).

I have my shortcomings. We all do, I suppose, but language and communications are kinda supposed to be my thing, and when I’m at a loss for words, I get a little tweaked. Trying to describe Moon Hooch sends me in that direction. Maybe if I were a jazz cat, I’d have better luck, or if I hadn’t been kicked out of music theory in high school, never to return. I don’t know, Maybe then I could explain exactly how two saxophone players and a drummer can awaken an ancient desire to dance (I don’t dance) in me—and not just move in carefully thought out patterns of foot placement. We’re talking spontaneous luchings and possessed gyrations the world hasn’t seen since the Hamlin incident.

"Red Sky," from Moon Hooch is available now at Amazon.com (affiliate link).

Thankfully, there is no shortage of reviews of Moon Hooch’s recent release, “Red Sky,” that do a great job describing the technical characteristics of music that create the aforementioned irresistible urges.

I was just happy to talk with James Muschler, percussionist of Moon Hooch about the changes from the last album, "Cave Music," to this, activism, being your own tour chef, and hints at some of the next directions that the band's evolution is taking.

If you want to read other great press on "Red Sky," I recommend Consequence of Sound, NPR's "firstlisten," or Modern Drummer.

The band's website is the place to find everything thing you need to know about Moon Hooch, including show dates, bios, photos, and links to videos and social media. ALSO available is their weekly episode of their documentary "Between the Notes" (very worth checking out), and the link to the band's cooking blog "Cooking in the Cave," where you can pick some amazingly appetizing recipes that will tempt vegans and non-vegans alike.

INDIEcent Exposure #25: Alicia Beale — ”Ignite”

This episode of INDIEcent Exposure marks something of a watershed moment for us here at the Greylock Glass. When Alicia Beale took us up on our invitation for an interview, somehow we both wound up thinking it was to be a video conversation. Serendipity, I say.

Alicia Beale makes her solo debut with "IGNITE," (submitted photo).

And whythehellnot, right? We have the tools, and we're working up to that talent thing.

I don't remember exactly when we first made contact with this rising artist, but what a stroke of good fortune that was. When we heard the tremendous range, both vocally and emotionally, present in her songs, we were determined to have her on the show. A seasoned musician and performer, Alicia is also savvy in the ways of self-promotion, as you'll hear. She's definitely part of a new breed of artist, blending dreams and determination with a healthy dose of disciplined business sense.

We know you're going to enjoy listening to (or watching) our conversation with Alicia Beale.

Alicia Beale's debut album, "IGNITE," is available at Amazon.com

There's almost nowhere online you can't catch up with Alicia. In addition to her website, she's has a strong presence on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and Spotify.

About Alicia Beale

Hailing from Southeast Texas, Nashville singer/songwriter, Alicia Beale, knows how to bring it.

Alicia has been busy this past year, writing, recording, and releasing her solo debut record with friend and producer, Mike Gossin (Gloriana). The new record, which just released this summer, is full of fun dance beats, catchy melodies, and soaring vocals--even a choir. If you don't have her songs stuck in your head, you're doing it wrong.

Beale fronted hundreds of shows all over Music City and beyond, where she learned how to command a crowd. From 2008 to 2010, she paid for college by playing late nights down on lower Broadway in Nashville. In 2010, she founded the country Duo, Autumn Rose (prod.
