In this, the second of a two-part episode with Warren and Trudi Gatland, Trudi talks about the practicalities of her dad, Terry’s Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia diagnosis and the emotional toll it’s having on the family.
Terry developed dementia in his 80s and experiences significant short-term memory loss. Trudi openly discusses the emotional challenges of watching her father change and the strain it places on the family and her mother in particular.
Trudi talks about how the family work together to help and support Terry. We also learn about some of the coping strategies they use, including maintaining Terry’s independence where possible, staying in his frame of reference and answering repetitive questions with the same courtesy as the first time they were asked.
