Spencer Merk is a Cincinnati-based* trombonist that plays until he is blue in the face. Literally. He is also a composer, arranger, and educator. Last year (2022) was a big year for Spencer. Not only did he win the International Trombone Association’s J.J. Johnson Competition for Jazz trombonists under the age of 25, but he also released his debut album, Last Place in a Bear Race, in November of 2022 — a body of work that I believe is the beginning of an impressive catalog.
*Spencer has since relocated to Baltimore to pursue his master's degree.
