Today transnational tobacco companies like Philip Morris and Japan Tobacco compete with Indonesia’s cottage industry of local small-scale manufacturers. The powerful kretek lobby has successfully blocked Indonesia from joining the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).
