Dave Blakely, EVP of Mach49 which is a Venture Building & Investing firm, is a pioneer in innovation and venture-building with a rich career spanning multiple industries. At Mach49, Dave leverages his extensive experience with two successful startups and the renowned innovation firm IDEO, where he played a crucial role in expanding the reach of Design Thinking beyond physical product design to encompass services, experiences, and businesses. His work at IDEO, most recently as Managing Director of Technology Strategy, led to groundbreaking ventures for industry giants like Cisco and Johns Hopkins.
Dave's journey into the world of technology and innovation began in his childhood, inspired by his parents—two dedicated high school humanities teachers in West Los Angeles—who nurtured his scientific curiosity. Despite an early scare with the monotony of corporate cubicles, Dave pursued his passion for engineering, earning degrees in Engineering Physics and Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. His career took off with roles in robotics and technology strategy, eventually leading to his instrumental work at IDEO and later at Mach49, where he now mentors intrapreneurs within Global 1000 companies, helping them disrupt their industries and build the businesses of the future.
A true technologist at heart, Dave holds six patents from his work in electromechanical engineering. He is also a successful angel investor, board member, and advisor to various startups. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dave values being present in all aspects of his life, whether guiding teams to visualize new opportunities or spending quality time with his family and community.
