Webinar #266 Dr Alex Bolek - Healthcare amid civil wars & conflicts

Recorded on 25 September 2025 for ICMDA Webinars.

Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Alex Bolek

The healthcare system and its service delivery are one of the vital systems in any given country the interruption of which is disastrous. The healthcare system has seven pillars:

  1. Human resources for health
  2. Health financing
  3. Access to medicines and medical supplies
  4. Leadership and management
  5. Health infrastructure
  6. Coordination with health partners
  7. Health information systems

Civil wars and conflict affect all these pillars and therefore the whole healthcare system. In this webinar, we will describe the impact of civil wars and conflict on the healthcare system, consequences of related service delivery interruption, and some strategies to continue providing healthcare services amid civil wars and conflict.

Brother Alex studied medicine at the University of Oradea in Romania and has a Masters in Public and Tropical Health. He has worked as a GP and Medical Director in Khartoum, Sudan, and also for JHPIEGO and other international NGOs. He is the chairman of the CMDA in South Sudan and the Africa Coordinator for ICMDA. He is married to Helen and together they help care for 14 nephews and nieces. To listen live to future ICMDA webinars visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/
