If you are getting divorced or even thinking about getting divorced, here are the first three things that I want you to do on the financial front.
#1) The first thing I want you to get some money in a bank account with only your name on it that's going to ensure that you can pay your bills, keep a roof over your head, and buy groceries at the very least, and be able to do that temporarily.
#2) The second thing I want you to do is get a credit card in your name only, just like that bank account. Since it's in your name only, it can't be shut down by your spouse. It's often easier to get credit while you and your spouse still have your finances together, especially if you don't have a job in an income source of your own.
#3) And finally, I want you to start gathering financial information right away. Anything that you have legal access to. So get bank statements, get tax returns, get credit card statements, any important financial documents that you might have in the house. Get copies of them. Put them in a safe place. Save documents in the cloud in an area where your spouse cannot access it.
These three things are going to help you greatly in the process of divorce.
