This isn’t the Sloppy Joe your mom used to make—this is a Jersey Sloppy Joe.
In this episode of I Hope This Helps, we sit down with Matt Wonski, owner of Town Hall Deli in South Orange, NJ—home of the original New Jersey Sloppy Joe.
Matt’s journey began shortly after his father purchased the legendary Town Hall Deli in the early 2000s. Originally founded in 1927, the South Orange staple quickly became a family legacy—and Matt stepped in at just 13 years old, working behind the counter and learning the business from the ground up.
We talk about the deli’s rich history, how a trip to Cuba inspired the creation of the Jersey-style Sloppy Joe, and how this iconic sandwich became a local legend—served everywhere from family tables to Prohibition-era parties.
Matt also shares how he’s built strong relationships with vendors, how they now ship nationwide through Goldbelly, and his ongoing commitment to feeding students at both of our alma maters, Seton Hall Prep.
