This year is the 79th edition and includes the work of 75 artists and collectives working in painting, sculpture, installation, film and video, photography, performance, and sound. In this edition, for the first time in over a decade the curatorial team has been totally internal: Rujeko Hockley and Jane Panetta reveal statements of resistance with an emphasis on history and sort through divisive national political and social issues. The Whitney biennial traces the latest developments in American art. Themes in the exhibition circulate around issues of identity, representation, history, economics, class, as well as a critique on Western hegemony. The biennial spans several floors, outdoor terraces and features film and performance programs."
