Over the years, Joseph Walters, CTO of Schneider Electric, found ways to blend his love for business, finance, and sales with a people-focused approach, including finding strong mentors. That combination helped him develop a deeper understanding of how HR can drive business success: “In life, we can't create time, so it's really important for you to find great mentors around you that want to give back.” Walters believes mentorship was a game-changer in his career, and that having strong mentors early on were crucial in helping him sharpen his leadership skills and business mindset.

HRD TALK CA - Innovative hiring in an old school industry: CHRO of Pacific Pilotage Authority
When Danielle Lewis began her role as CHRO of the Vancouver-based Pacific Pilotage Authority, she had zero experience in the marine sector but a sense of the unique challenges the industry is facing in a world of labour shortages and cutbacks. Hiring for highly-specialized and experienced roles has required Lewis and her team to be innovative, developing a “Workforce of the Future” plan as part of the Authority’s four pillar strategy. In this episode of HRD Talk, Lewis spoke with HRD reporter Stacy Thomas about how she is collaborating with industry stakeholders to bring the “old school” marine industry into the modern world. We discuss specific strategies such as in-house education, as well as how she has learned to maintain her own mental health and bring those learnings to those she works with.
