EP 11 - Shazam… but for nature? Joycelyn Longdon on Justice Led Bio-acoustics

This week on How To Make Climate Change Sexy, I’m joined by the Award-winning Environmental Justice Technologist, Author, Speaker, Designer and Educator Joycelyn Longdon, to talk about her groundbreaking work in AI, bioacoustics, and justice-led conservation.

Joycelyn’s research at Cambridge focuses on ecoacoustics—essentially “Shazam for nature”—and how technology can be designed with local communities rather than imposed on them. We get into the colonial legacies in conservation, why tech can be both a powerful tool and a double-edged sword, and how participatory design can shake up environmental science. This episode is a deep dive into the messy middle of AI, climate justice, and the future of conservation.

Follow Joycelyn at @joycelynlongdon and check out her TEDxLondon Talk! Joycelyn has also just announced her first book NATURAL CONNECTION where she presents six key alternative roots necessary to cultivate a natural connection between ourselves and the living world: RAGE, IMAGINATION, INNOVATION, THEORY, HEALING and CARE. These roots represent practices, teachings and considerations for environmental action inspired by the legacies and ongoing resistance of marginalised communities. Her book is now available to pre-order here!
