S02E26: Kim Hamer - Helping us all help better when those around us are in need.

When someone within our circle is diagnosed with cancer it's a difficult experience for everyone.  Kim Hamer reminds people that "they're experiencing it too".  She leads from a strong place of empathy and experience.  Having lost her husband at a very young age to unexpected cancer she knows what it's like.  In this episode Kim talks about how she was frustrated with her mother in law until she realized "I lost a husband, but she lost a son".  Big, scary things happen not only to us but to those around us.  They affect our colleagues, families, friends, businesses, and so much more.

Kim helps businesses deal with those big scary things. Her organization, 100 Acts of Love provides training, coaching, and more to facilitate those conversations.  She helps managers know what to say instead "let me know if I can do anything" (which Kim advises is actually the worst thing you can possibly say).  Visiting the website will tell you why that's so bad, and the other 4 things you should never say.

Here's how they describe it on the website:

DID YOU KNOW

46% of those diagnosed with cancer are between the ages of 25 and 64, prime working years?

80% of those diagnosed with cancer intend to work while they are being treated?

Managing an employee with cancer is disquieting. Most managers don't have the correct tools to manage their team in a crisis.

Most managers don't know how to be empathetic and clear about workload and ability.

  • Most team members don't know how to support the employee affected by cancer and avoid giver's resentment.

Most employees affected by cancer are scared to ask for help and are worried about their ability to continue to work effectively.

  • Most organizations miss the opportunity to teach their managers how to manage through a crisis and help teams show up in a meaningful way that builds camaraderie and productivity!

Kim's work is amazing and so important.  Her energy is instantly healing.  You should get to know her better.
