This is a podcast about people...soldiers who served and sacrificed in the time of the Great War. It is a podcast where I bring the names carved in granite back to life...telling the stories of ordinary men (and a few women) who fought in WW1. Each episode is based on a unique biography written with care and compassion, aimed at helping us understand these ordinary soldiers. Each biography has been written and posted to Substack and Facebook...but I know that we are all busy. This podcast is for people 'on the go' and give them a chance to experience these interesting stories.

Heroes of the Great War - Episode 10 Samuel Simpson Sharpe

If there was a man who I would like to shake hands with, look into his eyes and say..."Its' going to be ok." it will be with Lt. Col. Samuel Simpson Sharpe. He was the founding commanding officer of the 116th Battalion. Scores of officers and private soldiers chose to join his battalion...because of him. He cared for the well being of his men...and it may be said he cared too much. This is the tragic story of his life and his far to early death.
