Episode 152: “Using with My Mom & Becoming an Addict at 11 Years Old”. ft. Melissa P.
Welcome to Episode 152 of the "Hell Has an Exit" podcast, host Teddy Tarantino sits down with  Melissa P., a survivor whose resilience shines through despite enduring 25 years of addiction. Melissa's journey is a testament to the human spirit's capacity to overcome immense adversity. Melissa recounts a difficult childhood marred by dysfunction and instability, where she was raised by her grandparents in a proper household. However, her life took a drastic turn when her mother, entangled in criminal activities, gained custody. Transitioning to a one-bedroom apartment with her mother exposed Melissa to a stark contrast in lifestyle, where she would be introduced to drugs at the ripe age of 11. Through the  chaos, Melissa found herself battling addiction, enduring a lift altering diagnosis of HIV which she contracted by her sexual abuser, and navigating a turbulent relationship with her mother, who neglected her well-being. Through sheer determination, Melissa managed to maintain stability in her life, holding down a job as an optician while grappling with addiction. Along her journey, she found solace in newfound spirituality and eventually remarried, finding support and strength in her recovery. The road to reconciliation with her family, especially her daughter, was fraught with difficulty, yet Melissa's story is one of resilience and redemption. Despite facing immense challenges, she discovered the inner strength to overcome addiction and rebuild her life.
