Creativity is a gift freely given, but must be honed and sharpened like a tool. Part of that honing and sharpening is doing the deep, interior work of being with our trauma and the conditioning we’ve received our whole lives. That honing and sharpening is HEALING. But for so many of us, it’s not enough just to make things and have them fill our homes like self-made, mini ego-museums of hoarding—we have to share our creations with the world. THIS is HEAL + GO PUBLIC where we discuss what it looks like to heal through the creative process and how we get safe enough to share our creations with the world. I’m your creative guide, Carin Huebner. I’m an artist, podcast producer + editor, and former Spiritual Director. I’m a master listener whose career used to be the art of interviewing and helping people access healing… an offering I give here in this space now. I have lived as, what Julia Cameron in The Artist’s Way refers to as, shadow artist for many years and am on my own journey of living a life and being a self that, instead, embodies artist. This space is a catalog of my own journey in that transition and includes my own creations as well as interviews (or case studies) of other creatives that are HEALING and GOING PUBLIC as well. I’ll also share with you my own ruminations and thoughts on the internal work and cost of creating and going public—the inner-work tools to create, and to go and stay public with your creations. Thanks for journeying with me. :) *New episodes are released bimonthly on Tuesday mornings.

Ep. 77 Using Interdisciplinary Art Making to Connect with Others + Self

Art is a powerful form of connection not only with others—but a powerful way we can find and know ourselves and how we look at this world. Interdisciplinary artist, Shawna Miller, is in the virtual studio with me today. We chat about art connection mothers and connecting self, creating art to be seen in a really challenging season, wrestling with the artist identity, taking time to experience awe, defining what is sacred, and not getting bogged-down in the details in order to stay true to the ‘why’ for the work.

Shawna Miller is a wife, mother, and figurative oil painter living and working near Aspen, CO. Her current work focuses on the bittersweet beauty and weight of motherhood.
