Creativity is a gift freely given, but must be honed and sharpened like a tool. Part of that honing and sharpening is doing the deep, interior work of being with our trauma and the conditioning we’ve received our whole lives. That honing and sharpening is HEALING. But for so many of us, it’s not enough just to make things and have them fill our homes like self-made, mini ego-museums of hoarding—we have to share our creations with the world. THIS is HEAL + GO PUBLIC where we discuss what it looks like to heal through the creative process and how we get safe enough to share our creations with the world. I’m your creative guide, Carin Huebner. I’m an artist, podcast producer + editor, and former Spiritual Director. I’m a master listener whose career used to be the art of interviewing and helping people access healing… an offering I give here in this space now. I have lived as, what Julia Cameron in The Artist’s Way refers to as, shadow artist for many years and am on my own journey of living a life and being a self that, instead, embodies artist. This space is a catalog of my own journey in that transition and includes my own creations as well as interviews (or case studies) of other creatives that are HEALING and GOING PUBLIC as well. I’ll also share with you my own ruminations and thoughts on the internal work and cost of creating and going public—the inner-work tools to create, and to go and stay public with your creations. Thanks for journeying with me. :) *New episodes are released bimonthly on Tuesday mornings.

Ep. 73 [Artist Series] Poetry as the Tool to Process Suffering w/ Barnabas Smith

Using consistent creative space to create a constant in chaotic seasons—this week I’m chatting with poet, illustrator, and designer, Barnabas Smith. We chat about the role of limitation within creation, being used for talent and not for message in religious community, the grief of releasing past works, and making for different reasons after and during religious deconstruction. Get your ears in it.

This is the first episode in the Artist Series!

Barnabas Smith is a poet, illustrator, and designer born and raised in Southern California. He has released four collections of poetry. His most recent collection, Serenade the Fire, documents the early days of the pandemic. He currently resides in Colorado with his two sons.

In the episode, we mention Elizabeth Gilbert’s book Big Magic and when she talks about American Poet, Ruth Stone’s, description of her creative process. I couldn’t remember Ruth Stone’s name during the episode. ;)
