This week on Have You Heard of...we're doing something that was going to happen off-mic anyways, so why not record it? We go through our Spotify Wrapped together and celebrate another year of data collection! We'll be talking about our number one traxx that shouldn't have been surprising (but were), admire how we've influenced each other's musical preferences (warm and fuzzy feelings abound), and find a new use for a D100. Someone gets stunned speechless! Listen to find out whoooooo! Also Emma keeps calling it Spotify Unwrapped and Jenny is very gracious and does not correct her. May the end of 2021 treat you with kindness and grace and may 2022 greet you with even more banger tunes.
Thanks to @itstimefordeej for his technical guidance!

This week on Have You Heard Of…we're talking about tick, tick...boom a movie that's loudest talking point is the endless parade of cameos engineered to delight and make the audience feel very smart and in-the-know. And while we have a lot of fun talking about that number we'll also be talking about communication styles, the differences between Jonathan (the character) and Jonathan (the person) and how we'll never really be able to watch this movie as he originally intended with his off-off-Broadway show because, well, Rent exists. Also how this movie made us both cry and feel happy to be alive. Feat. A Mishmash of Broadway trivia because everyone in this movie is connected to everyone else in this movie by at least three different threads.
Jenny’s Spotlight Swap: Dungeons and Daddies (*Not a BDSM podcast)

This week on Have You Heard Of…we’re back from hiatus and listening to Lauv's 2020 debut ep ~how i'm feeling~. Jenny explains the surprising (to her co-host, at least) way she discovered his music, we remember that loneliness existed pre-pandemic, and take the time to discuss every single song on this album because it really is that good and we wanted to admire the care and thought behind every piece of the tracklist. Also, Emma blacks out for a little bit. Feat. Alter Egos
Emma’s Spotlight Swap: The Get Down
Music: Something Elated by Broke For Free
Thank you to DJ for editing this week's episode. You can find him on Twitter @itstimefordeej
This week on Have You Heard Of...BROADWAY'S BACK and we're taking a little trip to David Byrne's brain and watching American Utopia. It's another concert episode (consider this a spiritual sequel to Celine Dion: Live in Las Vegas) and we’ll be discussing the different ways we've interpreted the narrative thread that runs through a music career and a public life that spans more than 40 years. We'll also be talking about dad rock, dad dancing, and loving drums. Feat. Jenny absolutely crushing it at the quiz of the week.
Jenny’s Spotlight Swap: Um Actually
This week on Have You Heard Of…LIVE FROM JENNY'S LIVING ROOM! We're talking about the 2014 movie Pride which we discovered together and, much like on Dai's flag, we recorded this episode holding hands. Not the whole time because sweaty palms. But the sentiment was there. We'll be talking the lost pastime of scrolling Apple Trailers and how it lead us to a movie that is wonderful and joyous, even as the world around its characters makes it increasingly hard to be these things. We'll be singing the praises of Pride's use of music (scientifically engineered to make you cry), the weird world of movie ratings, and how Pride's ensemble cast knows exactly how to shine when it's their time. Gethin, my beloved.
Emma's Spotlight Swap: Working Man by Rita MacNeil
This week on Have You Heard Of…we're watching Newsies. Specifically the 2017 recording of the 2012 Broadway musical about the 1899 Newsboys' Strike and not the 1992 movie that used to have the same name and is now called News Boys by the kids and corporations of today. We’ll take a quick trip to AO3-land before talking about where the fact meets fiction followed by sweet flips, sweet boys, and the Speorg Note. Feat. Jenny's father's incomprehensible connections (insert Buzzfeed Unsolved meme here)
Emma’s Spotlight Swap: All Aboard the Ted Lasso Train
This week on Have You Heard Of…is Yentl, a movie that (depending on which one of us you ask) is the first film ever made or the horniest (the correct answer is it's both). We'll be talking about the Oscar protests surrounding this film, Barbra's unrelenting vision, and how this movie is really just incredibly special because every you watch it something different resonates. Feat. Vanity Project Quizzing (said affectionately)
Jenny’s Spotlight Swap: Just as Yentl asked for permission to learn, BTS asks for Permission to Dance
This week on Have You Heard Of…we dive into a movie from our lost trial-episode days. It's Dirty 30! A perfect chaser for last week's episode, that hits just right in your late twenties (but is honestly a good time no matter how old you are). In this episode, Jenny will reveal the perfect public transportation on which to view this film, Emma tries out a new voice that really isn't that much different from her regular voice, and we talk about the sweet joy of thinking you know how a movie's going to go and then having it surprise you. Feat. Superlatives.
Also as I was typing this I thought "wow, it would been really appropriate if we'd covered this movie two episodes later" and then realized that two episodes from now is our 40th episode not our 30th and that sometimes numbers are confusing. It's really unfortunate there isn't a sequel to this movie that we could do in the future (but Hannah, Mamrie, and Grace, if you ever want to do this just saw the word! You have an audience ready!)
Emma’s Spotlight Swap: Stand-up adjacent content like Hacks or Inside
This week on Have You Heard Of…we're in such a good mood! We're having such a good time!! We watched Romy and Michele's High School Reunion!!! We'll be talking about already being in love with Lisa Kudrow and falling in love with Mira Sorvino, a soundtrack full of non-stop bangers that unstuck us from time, best friends (again), and also Emma's fixation on the Delco accent. Feat. How to create a fake identity for your 10-Year Reunion. Special thanks this episode to DJ (@itstimefordeej) for his technical aid this episode!
Jenny’s Spotlight Swap: Rainproof Gaming
This week on Have You Heard Of…Jenny introduces Emma to Robin Hood: Men in Tights. We'll be talking about this movie's memeability and how that's probably helped it stick around for so long (despite a lukewarm opening reception), how this movie makes up most of our knowledge of Mel Brook's repertoire, and our mutual longstanding love for Robin Hood in general. Also, Emma talks about how much she misses movie theatres. Again. Feat. A tenuous grasp on other popular franchises
Emma’s Spotlight Swap: No one is immune to Olivia Rodrigo.
This week on Have You Heard Of…Emma is very very excited to share the 2021 release Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar...to mixed results. We'll be talking about how this movie reminds Jenny of a movie from her childhood (that Emma has not and will probably never see), what parts of this movie work for the both of us (and boy they really do), and why this movie makes us seethe with jealousy. Feat. Barb and Star and a not-so-tenuous connection to past episodes.
Jenny’s Spotlight Swap: The bliss of living alone and making a new home!
This week on Have You Heard Of…true to our mission statement, Jenny is holding Emma accountable for a recommendation she gave her five years ago. After watching Teen Beach Movie in 2015 (and loving it!), Emma just...didn't watch the sequel. UNTL NOW. We'll be trying not to get derailed talking about the Iconic First Film, get sidetracked into swooning over Jordan Fisher's fairytale wedding, and discuss how this DCOM is the least heterosexual thing the Disney behemoth has ever produced. Feat. Emma desperately trying to remember DCOM lyrics.
Emma’s Spotlight Swap: Belinda Carlisle
This week on Have You Heard Of…Emma emerges as a Jem and the Holograms Movie Defender and kind-of, mostly, wins Jenny over to the cause (The soundtrack, y'all! No one is immune). We’ll be talking about Jon M. Chu’s filmography (again), why this movie deserved to be nominated for an Oscar (seriously), and how no one in this movie remembers they were in this movie (and if they did, they definitely don't remember what it was about) Feat. Name that Tune. A classic.
Jenny’s Spotlight Swap: Once Upon Apparel
This week on Have You Heard Of…we actually have some thematic relevance to last week's because we're starting in the middle of a franchise again. We'll be talking about Jon M. Chu's filmography, Jenny's favourite character type, and the lasting cultural impact of this soundtrack. Feat. a quiz that probably would have worked better in a visual medium but was still very fun to play.
Emma’s Spotlight Swap: an Ugly Betty rewatch
This week on Have You Heard Of…Emma drops Jenny into year nineteen of the Mission Impossible franchise. Also we're changing focus, this is now an Ilsa Faust & Benji Dunn fancast. In the 20% of this episode that isn't about those two we'll be talking about the appeal of telling a story for over twenty years, why we're thankful for the MCU's impact on Mission Impossible, what makes this chapter stand out from the previous four films, and why we think the music in this movie is exceptional (even when we somehow forget to discuss the theme).
Jenny’s Spotlight Swap: fresh cut flowers (spring has sprung! 💐)
This is a big one. And maybe (no, definitely) the most prep we've ever done for an episode. Because this week Jenny is introducing Emma to BTS! Forget the Panorama, the only anniversary we're celebrating this week is the one year anniversary of when Jenny first fell for these wonderful boys! You've probably heard of BTS (who hasn't at this point? They just CRUSHED their performance at the Grammys from several time zones away). But if you're wondering what makes them so special, don't worry. Prof. Jenny's got you covered. She'll be introducing you to each of BTS's SEVEN members, revealing a surprising member of ARMY, and conquering the difficult task of explaining what makes something so special to you when it's really really special to you.
Emma’s Spotlight Swap: Switchblade Sisters (I'll miss you!)
This week on Have You Heard Of…Emma introduces Jenny to The Longest Ride, the 2015 Neo-Western (at least according to Wikipedia, we have the good sense to know this is a straight-up romance). We’ll be talking about how this movie has the most satisfying ending of all time, how sometimes the meaning of love is someone having no idea what another person is talking about it and loving every minute of it anyways, and how Emma accidentally gave Nicholas Sparks too much credit for making up character names. RYAN DIRTEATER IF YOU EVER READ THIS I’M SORRY FOR LAUGHING AT YOUR NAME. I THOUGHT NICHOLAS SPARKS WAS JUST VERY ON THE NOSE FOR NAMING A BULL RIDER. RYAN DIRTEATER YOUR NAME IS COOL AS HELL AND I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING A NICE RETIREMENT. Feat. Nicholas Sparks retirement announcement because there’s a new Ruler of Romance in town.
Jenny’s Spotlight Swap: Wandavision
Hey there! We've recently become aware of some not-so-spooktacular technical issues in our original Halloweentown episode so we're reposting to the feed. It may not be October anymore but the Spirit of Halloween isn't just a store. It's something that lives in our hearts all year round. Thanks for listening!

We wrap up Not-So-Spookytober with the Disney Channel Original Movie and Modern Classic Halloweentown. Jenny’s introducing this movie to Emma and we’ll be talking about Debbie Reynolds associations, the recurring theme of trying to be a good parent, the real horror of this movie (being thirteen), and how Emma always, ALWAYS has her eyes out for romance. Feat. the Unparalleled joy of Buzzfeed quizzes
Emma’s Spotlight Swap: Feeling chilly
This week on Have You Heard Of…Jenny introduces Emma to a yet another movie she should have seen by now. Of course she knows Grease but she's just never gotten around to seeing it OKAY. We'll be talking about how all high school drama clubs are legally obligated to do this as a show, how everyone needs a friend like Frenchy, and how yes, while this cast is all clearly in their thirties, this movie really captures how absolutely, stupidly, ridiculous teenagers are.. Feat. an unexpected deep dive into some cinematic universes before that phrase ever really became a thing
Emma’s Spotlight Swap: Howard
This week on Have You Heard Of…Emma introduces Jenny to Logan Lucky and isn’t it a joy to just really enjoy a movie! We’re talking about finally boarding the Adam Driver Train, how Adam Driver and the rest of the cast are just wildly great, DADS, and the power of group singing. Feat: our absolute inability to plan or commit crimes
Jenny’s Spotlight Swap: the Sea Shanty Revival
