#115 Helping Data Scientists Deliver Value Faster with Rick Lamers and Yannick Perrenet, Co-Founders of Orchest

On this episode, host Kelly Kohlleffel is joined by Rick Lamers and Yannick Perrenet from the Netherlands. Rick and Yannick are co-founders at Orchest, which is an open-source, cloud-native, development environment built to make data pipelining quicker and easier for data scientists. Orchest helps you build data pipelines without frameworks by simply writing your data processing code directly in Python, R, Julia, or Bash. Rick and Yannick met at their university where they both continued to develop their love for computer science. They developed Orchest with data scientists top of mind. While developing Orchest they asked themselves, "How do we let data scientists independently get to production with their workloads that meet the high standards of production work?". They came to a solution that didn't require software engineering skills. Data scientists can execute a simple install and behind the scenes, Orchest builds a Docker container and makes it ready for use inside their cluster. Notebooks are something all data scientists are familiar with, so this is the key interface Orchest uses for interacting and coding. Their goal is to let data scientists focus on the data to analyze and learn from it. The core philosophy of Orchest is to create something that would allow data scientists to use the tools they are familiar with today and bring them into Orchest and continue their workflow, but in an environment that's going to allow them to scale without creating chaos. Everything Rick and Yannick do at Orchest revolves around taking the complexity out for data scientists so that they can continue to deliver more value from data.
