It's mental health awareness month and perinatal mood disorder/postpartum depression awareness week and in this podcast you'll hear about my experience with this.
These changes in behavior can start at any point during the first year of your baby's life. Doctors have not been able to determine exactly what causes these mental illnesses, but they all agree that the hormonal changes, the stress and the life altering event of becoming a mom or adding a new baby to the family just increases your chances of becoming one of the statistics.
I didn't think I could also suffer from this. And it wasn't until that day in the doctor's office that she asked me if I was okay and my reaction was to cry... I mean, ugly sobbing cry. To which she responded "it's okay, you are just dealing with postpartum depression."
You may feel shame, anger, extreme sadness, but the most important thing is to find someone to talk with. If you have any thoughts that you know they are not you...seek help immediately. Don't wait, and remember that it's okay to not be okay!
