Episode 15: How to Find a Doctor Who Actually Listens
Ever walked out of a doctor’s appointment feeling rushed, dismissed, or like your concerns weren’t really heard? You’re not alone. In this episode of Gut Feelings: Life Unfiltered, we’re diving into one of the most important (and overlooked) aspects of healthcare—how to find a doctor who actually listens to you.
We believe medicine should be a partnership, not a power struggle. Together, we’ll explore what it really means to be heard in the exam room, how to advocate for yourself, and red flags that signal it might be time to find a new provider. If you’ve ever felt like you had to “prove” your symptoms, this conversation is for you.
Use these in the initial inquiry or while doing research. These are especially helpful when vetting a functional medicine provider or concierge doc.
Do you take time to review previous labs and testing before ordering new ones?
What is your approach to hormonal conditions like endo or PCOS? Or whatever condition you are seeking a doctor for?
Do you integrate diet, lifestyle, and nervous system health into your treatment plans?
How long are your visits?
Do you offer virtual or email support between visits?
What is your stance on patient involvement and autonomy?
Are you comfortable working alongside other practitioners?
What lab panels or functional testing do you typically use?
Bonus: If you get an email or phone call from a nurse or office manager, ask: "How would you describe the doctor's style when it comes to listening to patients?" (You’ll learn a lot from how they answer.)
