She started her software journey in university, tutoring to earn passive income. Her skills grew, and she offered courses in Java, web development, and mobile development with Flutter. She even hired others to teach graphic design and video editing! The arrival of Covid-19 presented a challenge, but also an opportunity. Kalkidan leveraged her savings to start her own company, building websites for local businesses in her hometown of Combolcha. Despite the distance from the capital city, she persevered. However, just as she was gaining traction, Covid restrictions eased, and she was called back to university. Undeterred, Kalkidan turned to Upwork and freelancing. Her hard work paid off, but she also discovered the challenges of freelancing - writing proposals, competing for projects, and encountering clients who undervalue her skills. This led her to seek a full-time remote position. Through LinkedIn, she landed a dream job with a Danish company in Copenhagen. However, after living there for a year, Kalkidan realized Denmark wasn't for her. She returned to Ethiopia and poured her experience into creating a highly successful Udemy course, "Leveling Up as a Node.js Developer - Advanced Node.js 2024". Now, with over 500 students enrolled, she's passionate about growing and promoting her course.
