Why don’t scrum teams plan out the scope of sprints well in advance of sprint planning?

In traditional #projectmanagement environments, the #projectmanager will work with #project stakeholders, directors and senior managers to scope a project - from start to finish - and then create deadlines and cost constraints for the team to deliver. In an #agile environment, we are dealing with complexity - in essence, we don't know the answer upfront and won't know until we have completed the work - and so we can't guess upfront what the answer might be, how much that will cost, or how long that will take to deliver. Often, people ask why a #scrumteam don't scope the full quarter, year, or 3-years' worth of work upfront and populate the #backlog based on what they have decided is important over the short, medium and long-term. In this short video, John McFadyen explains why #agile teams don't do this, and why an #agileframework is purposefully designed to focus on the short-term, highest value work rather than scoping months or years worth of work upfront.
