Flight Emissions Data Is Everywhere Now. How Did This Happen?
GreenShift is a podcast from Skift that focuses on climate change and travel. Each week, Climate Reporter Darin Graham will report on innovations and challenges across the travel industry and speak to industry leaders and thinkers. Today, when travelers search for flights on most major platforms, Google, Skyscanner, and others, they'll see carbon emission estimates displayed alongside ticket prices. The organisation behind this initiative is Travalyst. They’ve spent years working to standardize how flight emissions are calculated and presented to travelers. I wanted to understand how this all came together, how one organisation managed to get the industry aligned, and more importantly, whether it's making a real difference. So I spoke with Polly Lomas, Travalyst's Head of Strategy and Impact, and Alix Farr, a Senior Product Manager at Travalyst. One thing that really stands out is the industry cooperation. Major players like Google and Skyscanner haven’t just signed on. they’ve helped lead. It’s a rare example of alignment across a competitive sector, and it raises a bigger question: Can other parts of the travel industry follow suit? And should they? Note: Skift’s in-depth reporting on climate issues is made possible through the financial support of Intrepid Travel.
