When we hear about environmental design in architecture, we often think about including more plants in the building design. But what, when the surrounding environment is not full of lush greenery but instead has lots of waste and human made refuse? We can include it through recycling to enhance, both design and sustainability of our structure! Meet Monica Zakariya who applies her architecture and engineering skills to design and build structures and objects out of literal trash that is available in the place of construction itself. With her Egyptian company Eiid Studio she manages to merge the passion for recycling with her high standards as a designer and environmental architect while raising awareness for sustainability among fellow Egyptians.
عندما نسمع عن مصطلحات مثل "تصميم بيئي"أو "تصميم مستدام" في مجال الهندسة المعمارية، يتبادر لأذهاننا غالبا إدخال نباتات في تصميم المباني. ولكن ماذا إذا كان لا يتوافر بالبيئة المحيطة أي مساحات خضراء زاهية، ولكنها تحوى مخلفات ونفايات من صنع الإنسان؟ هنا تحديدا يمكننا إدراج هذه المخلفات في التصميمات من خلال إعادة التدوير، من أجل تحسين التصميم ذاته من ناحية، ولتحسين استدامة المبنى من ناحية أخرى. تعرّف معنا على مونيكا زكريا التي تستخدم قدراتها في الهندسة المعمارية والتكنولوجيا من أجل تصميم وبناء منشآت ومباني تتكون من مخلفات موجودة في موقع البناء. ومن خلال شركتها Eiid Studio المصرية نجحت مونيكا في دمج شغفها بمجال إعادة التدوير مع متطلباتها العالية بصفتها مصممة ومهندسة بيئية، ونجحت في الوقت ذاته في زيادة الوعي بالاستدامة بين زملائها.
