With the motto “Smart About Sharks,” the Gills Club fosters positive attitudes towards sharks and jump-start youths’ interest in STEM subjects, boosting their chances of entering careers in science. The Gills Club is the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy's STEM-based education initiative dedicated to connecting youth with female scientists from around the world, sharing knowledge, and inspiring the next generation of shark and ocean advocates.

Dr. Catherine Macdonald is an interdisciplinary environmental scientist and Research Assistant Professor at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science at the University of Miami. She is the Director of the Shark Research and Conservation Program (SRC), which focuses on shark research and public science engagement and education.

Dr. Macdonald is also the co-founder and Director of Field School, a marine field science training program with a focus on conducting safe and responsible marine field work in an inclusive and supportive environment.
